Default Docking pay to pay for enhanced CRB!

Dear all,

I've been supply teaching with Hays for the last five years (not all the time - I do have another life) and on having a new consultant start she wants me to fill out loads of new forms as if I've just started.

One of these forms told me I was going to have to pay the 40 odd quid for an enchanced CRB and that it would be docked from the 86 quid net I get for a days work. I've never had to pay for a CRB before, enhanced or otherwise.

Can they do charge me for this?

I'm going to ring round other agencies, check with my union and check with my accoutnant to see if it could count as a professional membership type tax deductable expense.

all the best,

still here

Hi,

I'm pretty sure they can charge you for a CRB check... many people find themselves paying for maybe 3 or 4 checks in the same term as they start with different agencies... I know certainly everytime my contracts end on Aug 31st with my 2 schools and start again on Sept 1st, the LEA send out the forms for me to fill in again.. fortunately I don't foot the bill!

Whether they can suddenly charge you just because they've got a new consultant, I think that's outrageous!! Can you speak to another consultant? It's their problem really, new staff at their end should not affect you!

Thanks,

Yep, it really doesn't seem fair. Did you claim the money back as a business expense? I'm not sure if you're freelancing (it's a tempting route).

I've often wondered how much does it cost to look up our criminal records and see we're all well-behaved? It all seems a big con to me.

I'll check if it will be deducted from my gross or net income and leave them hanging on until my current CRB expires in January?

Anyway, back to my other life, writing about plant macrofossils and listening to the Dixie Chicks. Thank sanity I don'k have to prove I've never traded in stoled antiquities to do archaeology!!"!

hope you're having a good break. This forum's a great

I've never paid for one personally, but certainly would try and claim it back! I'd just put it in the accounts and if I'm audited and they say I can't have it, then shucks I'll have to pay the extra few quid... but worth a go!

It's my dad's 60th tomorrow, and unbeknown to him, I've hired a Jaguar (XJ V6 Sovereign 2.7L Diesel on an 08 plate [£51,000 new] if anyone's as

as me!) for him.. he'll get it tonight around 5pm, and mum's booked a lovely restaurant and they'll have to pick up friends miles away, so he can get to show it off then, then he's booked the day off tomorrow and they're planning a drive into the Dales or the Peaks, so he'll have a lovely time swanning round in it! Always wanted one, no chance of getting one, so he'll enjoy this!

Why I wrote this is coz you said hope you're having a good break, and I've basically spent the whole week trying to get it sorted!!!

Yes it is quite normal for supply agencies to get you to pay for your CRB, and althought it seems rather odd that this new consulant is making you do it, schools do ask for up to date CRB's (enhanced doesn't really mean much - it's the level that you have to have to work as a teacher) LEA's foot the bill when you take on a contract, but agencies don't. The CRB do charge for any employees to be checked, only volunteer checks are free.
So unless you can argue that you don't need a new CRB check, I can't see a way out of it.
