SUPPLY TEACHERS TO RECEIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING

11/06/2002

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has joined forces with Hays Education Personnel to provide supply teachers with continuing professional development training.

A new pilot scheme will give 1,000 supply teachers in England opportunity to gain a BTEC Professional Development Qualification.

The accredited course, called ‘Advanced Professional Certificate in Effective Supply Teaching’, has been designed specifically to help supply teachers further their classroom skills and educational knowledge. Teachers will be able to use the qualification as evidence for Performance Management and Threshold Assessments and so increase their earnings.

School Standards Minister Stephen Timms today welcomed the launch of the pilot scheme:

"Supply teachers make a valuable contribution to our drive to raise standards in schools. The Government recognises that high-quality professional training and development is vital to ensure that they keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date. I welcome the growing impact of the LSC initiative in this important area.

"The scheme will provide supply teachers with improved skills, expertise and confidence to fulfil their role in the classroom. Pupils and teachers will benefit enormously from having better-qualified professionals available to teach in schools. And supply teachers will be properly rewarded and recognised for showing commitment to their own development."

Michael Stark, Head of Workforce Development at the Learning and Skills Council, said:

"This new course responds to a real need. The Government, the General Teaching Council (GTC) and Ofsted have all called for further professional development for supply teachers. Teacher unions have produced a charter calling for supply teacher parity with permanent staff.

"All teachers are entitled to high-quality continuing professional development. But supply teachers face especially challenging and varied demands. They need the training to perform that role, and the certification which proves their competence. That is why our partnership with Hays Education Personnel is so important. This

scheme will give major benefits to both teachers and students."

Mark Staniland, the Managing Director of Hays Education, said:

"Through this qualification, for the first time, supply teachers have gained access to an accredited course that will allow them to progress their careers.

"Each teacher will be assigned an individual Hays Education mentor to oversee their progress. Schools will benefit as the quality of supply teaching is enhanced. We hope to train 1000 teachers over the next year.

I have been on two supply teacher courses run by the agency. They were great as I got to mingle with others! Except they were all secondary teachers and I'm primary!

Yeah, I'm qualified enough, I've been on a million courses, but I have been missing out recently on some important courses that no school invited me on, like they had one recently in this area about how to physically handle children in dangerous situations/who were fighting/who were hurt etc. Would like to keep up-to-date with stuff like that, if nothing else... And yes, you get to meet other supply teachers and have a good grumble, like on here!!!
