t to do something else, I seriously don't want to be a supply teacher anymore. Supply is great when I go to the same schools and see the same faces, or get longer term posts of a few weeks but day in day out in a different school is just so depressing. The children have no respect and most of the school staff just ignore you.

I know some people on here have left teaching for one reason or another and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for careers to look at. Transferable skills and all that.

I really don't want to not be a teacher anymore, I worked hard to become one but I need some financial stability. Am trying to pay off student debts and now having a mortgage I can't keep going with the uncertainty of the work. Any suggestions welcome.

with parents too. I ran groups where parents would do workshops or have discussions whilst their kids were in creche, but I also did groups just for parents when they wanted to learn about play. I also worked with Librarians and health staff running projects. The skills you have easily transfer.

After my first break from teaching I:

Ran a hotel for a year whilst the owners took a year out.
Was accountantything for a structural engineer/planning consultant (OH's old boss).
Found a 'facilitator'

I did a lot more private tutoring. I'd love to get to the stage where I saw a retired teacher in Devon at a few years ago:
She had 2 sessions each evening, 4-5, 5-6, and 3 on a Saturday morning, 9-10, 10-11, 11-12... had 6 kids at each session... then you don't have to charge a lot = more customers = loads of money! Honestly, if any of us could get to that point, just think, that's 78 kids a week, and at £5 a session, which is nothing to parents really, it's £390 a week, for 13 hours work!!!!!

The next time I break from teaching (

as a labourer/runner/designer for OH (he's managing a big house conversion at the moment, other than ours)
Hopefully doing private tutoring as above
Doing as little supply as possible, but if it's there, and I like the school, will take it, max. 1 day a week
Getting my house finished so I can do B&B

and painting stuff and people wouldn't pay very much for what thought was fantastic stuff.
I can only say that I am so glad to have 2 full terms teaching at one school where I like being so that I know exactly where I am going each day and that finances will be good for a time. The uncertainty of supply teaching and income is very stressful and you do have to deal with some little and big sh*** a lot.
If you stick at supply things do crop up for longer periods and there's not much work at our hourly rate around. This will be my 3rd fixed term contract.

I have also found that teaching agencies aren't highly rated by some schools. The work I have found is by getting my C.V. together with a covering letter phoning schools to arrange an appointment with the head and trying to sell myself, to a point touting for business!!!!! I also think that a good reason for not being in full time work is useful to have.

Good luck with whatever comes your way.

of interesting ones that I might have a crack at. Not sure if I totally have enought experience for them but worth a go.

Joan, how do you get paid from schools when you contact them directly, do you have to go through the LEA or register as self employed. In our area schools all use agencies so not sure how the CV thing would go but I think I know enough schools now to maybe give it a go. I think I have huffed one of my agencies by refusing a particular job as they have been really funny with me on the phone ever since.

Leics C.C. has a form which I have to fill in with school, times, N I no etc. the head has to sign it, agree the hours and put in the school code. I take the form away with me and use the same form at the next school. This has to be sent to County Hall every second Friday and I am paid 3 weeks later straight into my bank account. I get a pay advice at home and I have an employment number. I used to think it was a bit of a bind because I used to have to find the boss or deputy at the end of the day when normally they are busy with parents/staff meetings and I found it a bit humiliating. I have now found that if I give my form to the secretary each morning they can usually get the boss's signature during the day.

I have to be organised with this because if I am not I don't get the money!!

Also I have now got 4 CRB checks for 4 individual schools. Leics has its own contracted Teaching Agency but the only thing good about joining that agency is that Leics paid for a 5th CRB check which covers all Leics schools.

Last September there was no work and I became rather down about it and that's when I

ted touting for business.

Interestingly, Leics Supply Agency (Reed) was advertising last week for people to work with them recruiting supply teachers and putting them out to work.

Now there's a thought!!

Danfur, it's a lot easier in Cumbria, you just work, and the school secretary asks you to sign a time sheet. The very first time sheet you have will action some form filling up at Carlisle. Then every school you work in each month will ask you (unless you have to prompt them) to sign your timesheet - should be at the end of the month, but many ask on the first day you work that month in case you're not in again.
