Default Class rules

Hi, Im new to supply and have my first job lined up on wed. What are people's thoughts on taking along a poster of what my class rules are (very simple with just a handful of rules) so i can set my expectations at the beginning of the lesson and use it as a prompt?

I agree - a poster would make your rules very clear (try to use positive rather than negative statements)

I usually looked for the class rules / contract poster in the classroom and reiterated that the same applied no matter what adult was in charge!

As above! I do think its a good idea, but you must follow the behaviour policy of the school you are working in.

Yes agree with what is on here, I used to just verbally let them know that if they wanted to speak they needed to put their hands up, if I was talking or another child the expectation was for them to listen etc, etc.

It is always a good

to let them know the first time that you meet them what exactly you expect from them and the way that you opperate (no nonsense approach).
Good luck with it, sure you will be brilliant

thanks Mandy

I usually ask children why they should not call out, ie. no-one is heard individually. Then I ask what they ought to do and why, ie. raise our hands because everyone should have their say. It is rare that they cannot answer these questions, whether they adhere is another matter!

I also explain how I like the children to sit. For, example all four legs of the chair on the floor. A school once complained about this, but some people are unreasonable aren't they?

I have four rules on laminated cards which I have used for years - listen carefully, look forward, put your hand up and please sit nicely. They usually dovetail pretty well with the class rules and are simple enough to go through very quickly right at the start.
