What age group will you be teaching? With FS and KS1 I always have a story of sorts to hand or poetry for any short gaps

I like to put a maths or language challenge on the board for them to think about after they have finished their work (individually or with a friend depending on the child/class/my headache!).

How about...
a 3x3 grid with 12 written in the centre square - children need to fill the other squares with the numbers 1-8 so that each line adds up to 12

codes - a=1, b=2 etc - write a question in code for your friend to read and answer

dart boards - each child could draw a mini dart board (or you could make and laminate some beforehand), close their eyes and make 3 dots on the board with a pen/whiteboard marker. Add their scores and see how many darts it takes to reach 100

Enjoy!

Or Countdown! Put 1, 2, 5, 7 & 10 on the board, and then choose a random number upto 500 for them to get to... they will be more enthusiastic if they have whiteboards and pens to jot on rather than mental?

Welcome by the way, and good luck!

Sorry, Nutty. I don't understand how 'Countdown' works but it sounds like a great filler - please explain in words of no more than one syllable (I've had a hard day with some pre-schoolers who really didn't want to do PE!)

Hehe! Same as the TV programme?

Put on the board e.g.

1, 2, 5, 7, 10, or another selection of easy numbers...

Choose a random number e.g.

108

They have to make it, use each number once, use any operation... e.g.

2 x 5 = 10 x 10 = 100 + 1 + 7 = 108!
