Another one I do which I have on my memory stick is a multiplication puzzle. The children choose 4 random numbers which they multiply horizontally and vertically then add the answers to get the total. I use numbers to 20 and the children work in pairs or as a class. e.g
2 x 13= 26
x x
18 x 7 = 126 126 + 26 = 152
= =
36 91 36 + 91 = 127

152 + 127 = 279

I hope that makes sense!

.

I suppose you could simplify it for Years 1 and 2 using lower numbers or adding horizontally and vertically instead... or maybe move onto negative numbers by subtracting ... ooh, they could do it for hours!!!!
