And I don't even like to remember trying to reach schools on public transport because THAT was always a complete nightmare!

I usually take a few of my favourite stories and let the children choose, plus they can be used for emergency planning

- I also take diary, phone, stickers, a few generic age appropriate resources and activities, pencil case and paper for notes, warm coat, scarf, hat and gloves. I like to be armed for every eventuality but am reluctant to carry a load of things I won't use, so I also have a memory stick on my keyring upon which I have some standalone worksheets and activities I can print out if necessary (I take physical resources just in case there is no working computer/printer/you need a password/padlock/keycode to get into the ICT suite, you know the drill. It's no good having an amazing resource you just can't use!)

My most important 'ingredient' is to get to the school by about 8.15 rather than the 8.30 the agencies recommend, especially if it's a pre-booking, because by the time you've signed in, had your parking space approved by the secretary (oh yes, in one school this took a good 15 minutes!), been taken to the classroom, met the teacher if they're there and gone through the planning, familiarised yourself with the routines, met the teaching assistant, lost the teaching assistant, who has suddenly been given mysteriously important 'duties' to perform in another class, tracked down staffroom and

s and found a suitable location for your coat, blagged a cup of tea after a criminally early start, and answered the usual questions from the staff about how far you've travelled and why you haven't got a 'proper' job, and that yes actually you do know what phonics is and can they please clarify exactly what 'ball skills' are being taught in PE, tried to have a quick look at the register to see if any kids have got an absolute mouthful of a name, and tracked down the resources that are the underpinning crux of your lesson only to discover another teacher desperately 'needs' them at the same time you do, putting the planning you've been left totally out of whack, found the
