Me... I can't see that anything has improved in the past 5 years, other than what individual schools/teachers have done off their own back.

And then the other issue, about 10% of many (dare I say most?)children's lessons (PPA) aren't being taught by teachers! That's certainly not a step forward...

Footie – you can have house points and golden time too for finishing that essay, you do know it’s a whole week early!

I’m going to be a teeny bit controversial now, but, only a teeny bit! I do think PPA for teachers has been a good thing,

What I resent is the way that the Government announced it as some kind of wonderful, 10% of teaching time for teachers for planning, preparation and assessment. It sounded absolutely fantastic in the media didn’t it? What they neglected to mention is that is wasn’t being funded properly and many children are now being taught by TAs! That didn’t get such a big mention in the media! Talk about vote winning!

At my last school the introduction of PPA was a nightmare… the school couldn’t afford to employ teachers, HLTAs were appointed, their class control was a real issue and behaviour in their lessons deteriorated and their professionalism was also an issue, for example, arriving late.

At one of the schools where I have been doing supply they are really well organised, 2 teachers cover PPA and the teachers in a year group have PPA at the same time to enable them to work together. I know schools can’t dictate how individual teachers use their PPA but it does seem like a good idea. At my last school, if we could have all had our PPA at the same time, that would have been one less meeting after school per week too (year group meeting during school time). I think schools should appoint specialist teachers for some subjects, Music, French etc where a degree of specialism is needed to do the subject well.

Agree with all the other comments!

I once gave OH an empty soap box for Christmas – he didn’t get the joke at the time… what a waste! Do you think me and Minnie need them?

. In the school I used to work at they had PPA for the KS2 teachers before it was brought in (don't know why KS1 teachers didn't get it, they weren't too happy we did and they didn't!!), and it was covered by a teacher who was employed by the school for that very reason. The only downside of it was you lost it if another teacher was ill or other things needed doing.

However, the way it has gone since it was implemented is disgusting, getting TA's, some of whom are mothers who left school at 16 and are just doing it as it fits around school hours and their child (or to keep an eye on their little darling!), to do the teaching is unbelievable, and I think if the general public knew the true picture regarding PPA there would be uproar about it. How schools can get away with it is beyond me.

Personally I do not think that edu

ion has got better under labour, and all this promised money wont make much difference - spending it on new buildings?!! believe it when I see it, it will be spent trying to make up the deficits!

All that has increased during Blairs tenure at number 10 is the stress of both teachers/school staff and children! SATS in year 2 are criminal. The stress those poor little kids, who are little more than babies, are under is ridiculas (sp?), all so the school can look good in the league tables!

League tables.... another gripe of mine... we have a school here (my stepdaughter goes to it), that always does really well in the league tables. However, I cannot stand the school, am not impressed with it, they are so far up there own backsides it is unbelieveable. They do not stretch her at all, work that is set for her she can do in minutes! The whole atmsosphere within the school is not very welcoming, and the fact that they let me pick her up when she was ill without as

Dear me, I hope you used a spell checker in your essays. Utterly ridiculous not to have a simple literacy test before allowing people to join the police force. They must let anyone in these days........

No indeed you cannot. In fact we need to find a teacher of the 'old school' who will give you a good smacked bottom for being such a swot! [smilie=rk01_furiosa.gif]
