Would they continue to wear the veil in the classroom?
I don't see a problem with it really, kids are the most accepting/unassuming creatures around, or supposed to be anyway!

Forgot you didn't have a telly!

In the news the week there has been a big thing about a muslim TA who was dimissed (I think) from her job as she refused to take her veil off during lessons. She wears a veil where only her eyes show, therefore covering all her face. The school was fine with her wearing it in the staffroom/around school etc, but felt that since there were a large number of children in the class that she was working in who didn't speak English, they needed to see her mouth in order to help them learn the language.

She took this to be discrimination and took it to the courts, despite her Muslim MP saying that he agreed with the school etc. The case was heard in favour of the school, but she is taking to the human rights court....

BBC news ironically ended their broadcast about it last night by saying that underneath her religious gown (sorry, cannot think of the correct term, no offence meant), she was wearing jeans and platform/fashionable shoes....

Ahhhh! Now I see. OH just said that she didn't wear the veil in the first few weeks of employment, but then started wearing it... so people are saying she did it just for publicity/to make a point?

Maybe it's just coz the school's heating hadn't come on!!!

I'd be interested in seeing her job description. See if it says anything about helping the children to learn English.

We were talking about this in school the other day - when speaking, we tend to look at people's mouths if we are having difficulty understanding what they are saying. This is part of learning to talk, so having a veil over the face stops us from doing that.

The problem then arises when teaching children who do not speak English fluently, as they cannot see the articulation of the mouth when saying certain words. Covering the mouth therefore prevents us from learning - think of when you have asked a child to move their hand away from their face, because you couldn't understand what they were saying - same principle.

I think she was a bit silly really, the muslim woman, she did only start wearing the veil a few weeks in and regardless of whether the children were all muslim, in a muslim country the teachers would remove their veil in a classroom to teach, fact, if there are male teachers in the school they will knock very carefully before entering to warn her so she can cover. I am not surpirsed they sacked her. BA have also behaved abominably towards the woman with a cross, it was tiny, plus sikhs who work at BA may wear their turbans and the little red bracelet thing, same thing I think!
Everything seems to be anti-Christian in our predominantly Christian country which make me

. Giving drugs to addicts, compensation for going cold turkey, etc.

I was talking to a friend last night who has a friend in Leeds, she is thinking about moving back to this area as when it come to her daughter going to secondary school 25% (I think) of places are reserved for muslims.
