Default Falling numbers. Teacher cuts? Nah!

'Across the country, there is a trend of falling pupil numbers in primary and secondary schools, and the decline is expected to continue for at least the next 20 years. In Cumbria, about one quarter of school places will become empty over the next decade.'

A quarter!! Arghh! We're already over-staffed with supply/unemployed nationwide as it is! There are sooo many young hopefuls at St Martin's in Ambleside etc., and such a high percentage of the students stay on in Cumbria rather than going back home, and yet, places will only be cut by around 2% in that time!

If there was evr a time to not attract new recruits, it's now!

Hi Nutty, I totally agree with you. AND you can imagine how annoyed i was this morning when i tuned in to GMTV and they were on about (for about the 4th time this year) the lack of jobs for Nurses and how they are all getting trained and there are no jobs to go into. I mean, I do feel for them but sort of think, 'What about us?????' Who thinks about teachers, we are having as many problems as them!!!!!!

I know it's so annoying, there a big rant a bout this on TES (think i've seen you there nutty!)
I read somewhere that 'they' have predicted that in 2007 thousands are going to retire which is why they are still training the same numbers and putting out those crap adverts. I don't believe it though.
And yes it's annoying about the nurses in the news, nothing about the nurses but it means that the general public understand the state of the NHS but all education gets is crap about failing standards and behaviour. Healthy eating is about the only positive news we get. SO no-one understand the recruitment issues.
Right rant over
