Default Sheffield

I'm new to this....I'm currently in Bolton, but I'll be moving over to Sheffield in September, and maybe doing some work over there from time to time. Anyone got any handy hints/tips/things to look out for? Good schools/bad schools? What's the Authority like? etc?All helpgratefully received!

Hello there...
Mum worked for them for years, though things have changed in the last 20 years! I only went to school there as my employment was in Derbyshire. The south west of the city is the posher end but that doesn't necessarily mean the schools are better than those elsewhere. Are you primary or secondary?
Ooooh dear this is a difficult question! The supply agency I used was Capita and they were good at getting me placements in more local schools so there wasn't too much travelling.

Hi
Schoolwise Sheffield is like any other city some challenging areas some less so. Having lived and taught here for 30 odd years I could do just as you ask but feel it would be better via a pm!

welcome anyway! I have always worked in the 'very challenging' category and thrived, frankly found my sons leafy suburb school really dull and boring. Keep an open mind and as often repeated on this site remember you dont have to go back to schools were you have bad experiences.

Thanks for your replies - I'm in Secondary, by the way, and my subject is Maths. I teach A level, too (when I can get it, which is not very often). I'm particularly interested in knowing about the Authority - it says on the website of their in-house supply agency (SESSA) that supply teachers are paid to scale, which I'm particularly keen on! The Authority I'm working for now (Bury) do exactly that, but some of the neighbouring ones don't. Indeed Bolton Authority have now

e it pretty well impossible to work for them directly and get paid to scale, with pension contributions; they seem to do everything via supply agencies ('Select', and the rest). I wonder if anybody has worked for Sheffield via SESSA and can validate their claims of paying to scale, pension contributions, etc?

re SESSA yes they pay to scale but.. a word of warning they let my crb expire and then told me I couldnt work when it was their fault! Did get it sorted rapidly but havent trusted them since. Capita have proved more reliable. Cant help on the secondary schools I'm primary.
