Default Registering with several agencies

to be registered with more than 1 agency in case I fall out with one.
So recently the guy at agency #1 threw a strop because I'd accepted work from #2. They KNOW I'm registered with #2; I asked them for a reference, on the grounds.. 'I need more work'.
The only way out was to blow out #2, for that day

Can those of you who are registered with more than 1 agency tell me how I can manage this situation.

When I did supply for 2.5 years, I worked for 3 agencies. It was a case of whoever booked me first, got me - end of story. They knew I was with other agencies, and knew that there was a possiblity that I wouldn't be available if they wanted me.

The agencies tend to have loads of teachers on their books - If they are going to throw strops, tell them that you will work just for them if they can guarantee work every day - that should shut them up!

Yes I agree. I work with 2 agencies and one particular school directly (through whom I get work at least one day a week most weeks) and whoever books me first gets my services!!

I asked Agency #1 to only give me pre-booked work (as they had been terrible at giving me enough work) - they now give me something every week and makes my life easier as it's prebooked.

Agency #2 have an online availibility diary which is great - at a glance, they know if I'm available or not, without having to phone me. Every agency should have one!

I would give priority to the school (as they pay me more as there are no agencies involved and I really like the school) but they understand if I'm not available at short notice. I was tempted last week to cancel an agency booking so that I could work there, but I'm now glad I didn't as the school I went to with the agency have just booked me for a month's sickness cover!

Ditto to the above, when I was on supply I registered with 2 agencies and whoever booked me first got me. Unless I only had something like a half day booked with 1 and the other offered me a weeks work and I would cancel the half day. I know I shouldn't have but really work wasn't that regular and you have to think of yourself sometimes. Usually they were ok with it, I was always pretty straight with them.

I started off with just two agencies three years ago, but found when the second school year began that one seemed to go silent - so I searched around and signed up with more.

I have found that in this area (N Hertfordshire) more and more agencies are starting - there are at least a dozen working in this area - all competing for work. If you stay with one agency and a school you are working with s

es (as they do - regularly) you can be left high and dry.

I must be registered now with at least 10 local agencies. They all know it, and I take that which comes first. As a result it is rare that I do not have any work. Talking to other teachers who are loyal to one or two agencies, I am getting much more work than they are.

I registered with several agencies and was eventually dropped by one of the first/main ones after seven years. I think this was because they did not like me working for others, albeit occasionally. However, I cannot say this with certaintly because the agency refused to give a reason. According to my union this is legal and therefore acceptable.
