Default Poor school behaviour plan - what to do

Hi guys,

Was just wondering, what do you normally do when you're sent to a school where the behaviour plan is really poor? Do you make up your own strategies instead?

I was in a school today and the behaviour was awful - kids wouldn't listen/talking over each other etc.. I had a tambourine to gain attention, and explained rules first thing but by the end of the day they were throwing stuff around the class and crawling under tables. I sent a few out of the class and one to the HT but all the class teacher had in place was a smiley face and

face on the board for names to be added to. I stuck to this (I usually try to when I'm in different schools for consistency) and I handed out stickers and certificates to the "smilies" but the bad ones just got worse.

I ended up running out of energy and

s by the end of the day. The naughty ones just didn't give a toss that they were on the "cloudy" side and continued to misbehave.

What do you do when this happens?

Forgot to say...feel like a really c*** teacher now. To add to the whole disaster I had 2 students observing who must have thought it was the worst days teaching they'd ever seen

Really tired, and not staying on here long, but just wanted to say you're not a cr*p teacher, they're most likely in a cr*p school! That's what I find!

Thanks, Nutty. Get an early night. You've had a hard day too! Well done on getting through your interview. Your lesson sounded great, really well planned.

Feet up and glass of wine at the ready...did anyone catch the new Lost last night? So glad it's on again...

I agree with Nutty, and if you get asked to go there again, I would quickly remember a doctors/dentist/hospital appointment you have

What I do is (in no particular order)
~go home
~ruin my diet with lots of chocolate and red wine
~sound off at OH who listens patiently but hasn't really a clue
~go to TES site and remember how lucky I am not to have the ~experiences of lots of supply teachers there
~tell the agency I don't ever want to go back there thank you
~remember some poor sod has to teach that class at that school all the time
~remember that one bad day here and there is to be expected.

I know you probably want strategies to use in the classroom to prevent it happening, but if sending a child to the HT didnt have the effect of him coming to the room to see if you wanted any other support and to make it known to the children that he would NOT be pleased to see any child who cannot behave then there is little you can do.

The only advice is if it clearly going pear shaped ask the students at break if they culd please go to another class for the rest of the day as you are having a tough time with the class and will possibly manage better without them. Also talk to them in a jokey way and say something like "Your learning experience today is 'how not to teach'". Say it with a

and they won't think you are crap at all.

Thanks everyone! Feel a bit better today. I have the same routine, Minnie, when I come home LOL.

OH is supportive but I'm sure there are times when he wonders why I'm moaning so much. Sometimes I think it's be a good

.

There were another 4 supply teachers in the school yesterday so I suppose that's why FT staff didn't drop by after I sent one child to the HT. It seems to be one of those schools that relies heavily on supply teachers. Hmmmm

So many FT staff off could be an indicator too! Stress?! Hehe! Glad you're feeling better, and loving the signature!

Thanks, Nutty. Quick update. My nicest school phoned today and offered me a regular slot each week until the Summer. It's for 3 days each week which is exactly what I wanted. Can't believe it! No planning either and it's a year 2. Perfect!
