Default school threatening not to pay for 1 days supply

Yesterday i did a Year 4s day supply where I have worked many times very happily. However yesterday I was asked to do 3 duties, one after school (Ihad to walk some children to the bus stop), i taught maths, literacy and stood supervising Rugby in the pouring rain all afternoon as there was a visiting coach in. I marked the maths but did not have time to mark the literacy. i was never told at any time to mark it anyway though normally i always do. However today i get a phone call from the Head hinting i will not be paid as she wants me to return to the school collect the literacy work and mark it asap. I am now doing a long term sick cover and will not be able to travel the 35minute journey to collect. Can she not pay me? Help!! I could get her to post them to me.

That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. I know that it is always the polite to do the marking but it is not a requirement.

I doubt very much that she could not pay you... but she could make it difficult for you to get work in any of her friends' schools though... be careful.

Firstly, call your union and ask them to record what's happened for you. I echo Fraggle, it's polite to mark, I've been there gone 5pm on a regular basis, and never thought twice about it. But you did do 3 duties, and I'm sure the normal class teacher would not have this in the course of a normal day.

It's ridiculous asking you to mark it now... you (if brave and silly!) could just either put a tick on each page, or post 30 'Well done' stickers to her, one for each piece of work! Sometimes the class teacher actually wants to do the marking themselves, and often they leave it until the weekend to do some of them.

Tell her you've a raging cold from standing in the cold all day?! Sue for inadequate protection from the cold? Quote Health and Safety?!

Seriously though, unless it's on A4/A5 sheets of paper, you can't get her to post them. Explain that you did all the duties, what time you left, that you got paid 6.48 hours (or whatever) and feel you had done enough to justify the wage, and you're very sorry if she feels that you hadn't. If she feels that way, apologise that you can't accept any more work from there (guessing you won't get any anyway?)

Ooooh, difficult one though... maybe tomorrow she'll have got off her high horse, calmed down about it, and realised that she's lucky you marked one lot as you did so many duties. But be careful, what time did you leave that evening?

That is unbelievable! I am gobsmacked! What a b**ch! I am sure it is not legal but makes things very uncomfortable for you even ifyou do mark the books eventually you wont enjoy going back there. Nutty has given plenty of sound advice as usual, so I shall just say good luck with whatever you decide to do about it and let us know! Certainly doesn't sound like the kind of head I'd want to apply to for a more permanent job!

Yes I agree with Nutty, and if itwas with supply ,or there is an intermedery (spelling!?) then talk to them too. I think it is totally unreasonable considering the extra duties you did. Bit like my last school that expected our marking to be totally up to date all the time regardless of other duties.

Good luck
