Default Feeling down...

I have just heard that I have been refused an extension to my 4-term limit from one of the LEAs that I do supply for

. It is a big blow, as I work for one school in particular in that LEA area, and I thought it would be a straight forward thing. I don't know what I'll do after Christmas now, as the other main LEA I work for doesn't seem to bother with extensions, but I'm wary of continuing supply teaching in case something happens.

I am now seriously considering giving up teaching altogether - I have had to deal with hypocrisy, ageism and red tape for the last 18 months, and this is just about the icing on the cake...What is the point

that the reason NQT's have to do supply is that there are more of us than there are jobs. I have just started supply and I am already thinking about what will happen if I don't find some sort of contract in the next 3 terms.

I think you should all move to Wales. The only rule here is that you have to complete your 3 terms within 5 years of getting your PGCE.

As an NQT, you only have 4 terms in which you can do supply without doing any induction - and the clock starts ticking as soon as you do your first bit of supply.

It's not like I've not applied for jobs over the last year - I have applied for everything suitable in several different areas, and have had several interviews, but no job.

Feel like cursing loudly, are you saying that as an NQt you have to be starting your NQT year (presumably as a class teacher and not a ppa cover teacher) within 4 terms of graduating? That is ludicrous, are they going to take away your degree if you don't do it? Can they?

You don't have a limit on starting induction, but you can only do supply for 4 terms, then must ask for an extension from your LEA, or have a job that would cover at least some of your induction....and, as I have found out, extensions are hard (if not impossible

)to get from some LEAs.

Once you have at least a term's induction completed, you have 5 years to complete the whole induction year.

Is that just NQt's, what a very stupid rule and why wouldn't an LEA give an extension? If they won't then they should be finding you a job! OOH!

The LEA in question has given the following "exceptional circumstances" for allowing an extension:

Being unable to secure a post that can offer induction due to there being a shortage of such posts in your region (doesn't mention the number of teachers applying for each post...)

Personal circumstances that mean you are unable to move to another region in search of posts that can offer you induction

Serious illness preventing you from securing a post with a school that will last at least one school term.

I sent a list of all the jobs that I have applied for in the last year, but this obviously isn't good enough, and having a family obviously doesn't stop me from moving to another area....
