job to apply for: mixed age group!!
Hello advice time again!
Just found a maternity leave job to apply for - a C of E school but I can bit my tongue for a term! But my worry is that it is a mixed yr1/2 classs. Now I know hundreds of schools have this, and this school has 3 mixed yr1/2 classes so I wouldn't be on my own. But i've alway thought of mixed classes as really scary in term of managing differentiation etc. Any advice, so I can seem knowledgeable and competent in my application!? Unfortunatly most of the posts on TES about this talk about the nightmares of juggling phonics, NC etc!! But as this school has obviously been doing this for a while it should be well set up?

Go for it! If there's two other classes doing the same, you'll have a doddle!

I am doing mixed year groups and it is a bit daunting, I've decided not to try and work out which child is in which year group but to work on them in ability groups regadless of year group, try and have 3 or 4 groups of ability and plan as you would for a normal class is my suggestion. Go for it girl!

I did the same as g/span in my last post, mixed 1/2. It was the only 1/2 class and I don't do small people, so if I can get away with it, anyone can! With two parallel classes it'll be fine. Go for it![/b]

thank you for all your encouragement!
So how does it actually work? Vased around a theme and then differentiated L.I.? I read one thing that basically said just treat it like a single yr group just with a larger spread of abilities?
It just seems so alien to me, I've never come across it before and I've got so stuck in the NC objectives and age group level descriptors. Maybe it will be good for getting back to teaching proper - child centred rather than government centred?
I'm going to visit tomorrow so will know more then - about this and how religious it is!

Well the school seemed really nice, lovely big, well resourced bright classrooms and lots of activity. THe deputy is acting head and she seemed nice, they aren't looking for a christian in particular in fact she said she isn't and the only factor was that she remembered being asked at interview what the difference was between a christian and non-denom. school (which is a bit of a scary question!!!)
So I will apply, then have to see, still a bit scared of mixed age group, but I guess i'd learn!
Supply then this afternoon was good, remembered how to do it! A very organised school - it had a supply teacher folder in very class giving you all the info! THe children were good and as it was year 2 I was familiar with the work. Yr 1 tomorrow, already got the work - basically literacy most of the day! but everyone seemed lovely. So I'm feeling happy. Hpoe they were with me!
