Default You Must Read This - Scary stuff

Didn't know where to put this, so thought here would be the best place as most read!

Got this email last night and thought I'd better pass it on - scary stuff in the wrong hands.

A website has been brought to our attention that may pose a risk to some of our staff. The site is accessible via:

and by typing in an individual's name it brings up their current home address, phone number, any

internet entries (such as if their name appears in minutes or documents that have been published on the web), map and
directions to their house, details of the other members in their household, and details of all the neighbours in the same

street. (To see if your details are held go to the site, click on 'people', enter your first name and surname, and the location

where you live such as 'Kent', and click on 'search'.)

The Home Office are investigating how vulnerable staff groups (such as police, prison officers, social workers, etc) can be

removed from the site, but it would appear that current legislation doesn't allow for the site to be closed down as the

information is legitimately purchased census data that has been linked with other publicly available information.

There is however a route that individuals can use to request that their own data be removed from this site and I would urge

you to do this if you are concerned.

To do this you should send an email to

asking for your information to be removed. If you subsequently

find that your request has not been actioned within 21 days, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office by

sending an email to

and they will investigate further on your behalf.

Oh yes my sister sent me this, it is scary, but you can email them and have yourself removed from the list. Don't forget plenty of people have all our information so there are many more places to find it out. Talk about Big Brother!! Just be careful when people you don't know seem to know you I guess.

OH saw this on his forum... basically, it's a clever search engine, but all the info it shows you, can be found by doing a google, or going to Yahoo! too, if you look for long enough...

It doesn't put up any information that isn't already on the internet.

E.G. a guy on OH's forum was outraged to find when he typed in his name it came up with him - along with about a dozen other 'John Smith's' albeit.

When he clicked on him, it showed his postcode, his address, his neighbours addresses (clever, scary, but only taken from the online BT phone directory OR Royal Mail postcode finder, so it's there to be found anyway) also had a link to a map of his house (clever, scary, but take the postcode from BT/Royal Mail, and puts it into multimap/maporama/streetmap etc., so it's there to be found anyway).
He was also dismayed that it came up with his birthdate, a picture of his car, his hobbies etc., but, all this was was a link to posts and his profile in a forum he posts on, a public forum - he'd put the info on there.

When looking into this, I typed his name into Google. It came up with the link to said forum, and I could see whatever I wanted (profile/posts/piccies etc.), I typed his name into BT, came up with phone number, address, typed postcode from there into Royal Mail, to find all his neighbours, and typed this into maporama to find the map.

It's worthwhile emailing them to get your name removed... thanks for the link Footie, but do be aware that it's all out there anyway, this is just a clever site that brings it all together! If someone wants to know all this stuff, they just have to look! Electoral roles are also online somewhere, this is where the site gets it's info from in the first place... I'm not on there, I haven't registered on the electoral role yet!

yes, its the fact that its all on the one site and found very easily that worries me... lots of different info being on different sites takes a lot longer to find...
