Default Advice about taxes please!

Hi, I've just seen my first day's supply go into my account and 30 quid has gone on NI and Taxes, I know I'm paying the highest tax because I don't have a P45 having been overseas. My agency says they can make it lower by saying their my sole employer (if I get work privately I'd have to pay basic rate on that). What I am wondering is whether to wait a bit or to get them to change it now, and also, how do I get my taxes back (in April?) will they refund me automatically. I know I should ask my agency all this but I kind of phase out when people talk about things like that so it might help if someone writes it down for me! I am very crap sorry!

It's National Insurance that takes a huge chunk out! Ouch! I can't really advise you on taxes as I too, am crap at finances! I just let the agency sort it out and anything left is a bonus! I also got a nice cheque through the post from the tax man (rebate). Yummy!

They often need a real big prompt from you if you want taxback in April. Wait 'til you get your ... P60 I think it is, in April, and see if there's a cheque attached, if not, give them a ring. The IR phoneline people are the nicest ones I reckon, will sit for ages talking you through stuff. The tax will be sorted out in April.

You'll be on the emergency code for tax, which, to be honest, is the same as the 'normal' one anyway (aged 18-60 and not a student sort of thing), so you may be paying the right amount I'm afraid. It's just that the first £4k or so is tax free, and it might just be that that you need to claim back in April.

NI can also be claimed back in April if you think you've paid too much. I've got numbers somewhere, if you want me to look them up, give us a shout...
