Default They Won't Pay Me!! HELP!! (a bit long)

Back before Easter I was given a post at a school in Birmingham. It was for a challenging Y4 class (although I wasn't given the heads up on the "challenging" bit) and it was to last approx 6 weeks (until Easter) maybe longer. At the beginning of my 3rd week I started to feel as if I was getting through to some of the 23 out of 28 unruly children.

I get into work on a Tuesday to be told by the Asst. Deputy Head that they're going to "try someone new" in the class for the day. (Nevermind that I happened to be the THIRD teacher they had for the year already...the last one only lasting a month!) So I agree and accept my fate to s

with another supply to do PPA instead. By lunchtime I was miserable and spoke to the other supply teacher who had taken on my class. She said she didn't want to stay in there and wanted her PPA back...funny, because I actually wanted the class back...so we went to the Asst. Deputy Head to have a word. She explained her side and I explained how 2 weeks and 1 day wasn't much time to make a difference in a class so challenging. She agreed to let us return to our original posts and I went home that night feeling good.

The following day was wonderful! The kids payed attention in lessons...in fact, one even asked if he could stay in at play time to work on his literacy work some more because he was "having fun!" Any teacher or supply teacher for that matter knows how good those words can make you feel! However, that night coming home on the train I get a call from my supply agency telling me that I would not be at the school until Easter as the school had phoned them and asked them to end my assignment from that Friday. My agent tried to say they thought it might have just been too challenging of a class, but then admitted the Asst. Deputy Head informed her that she thought I actually "had little knowledge of the UK curriculum." (I'm an OTT from America where I was a regular classroom teacher before)

I was mortified and feel it's simply the school making excuses for their poor management and consequences for childrens' behaviour.

Anyway, on that Friday I was approached mid-day by the Headteacher (my first time speaking to her in person since I began my post) and she informed me the "new" teacher would be in for the remainder of the day to "get used to the class." (Something they did not afford me) She said they would pay me for the remainder of the day, but that I was no longer needed and could go ahead home.

The following week was payday and my wages were 1/2 day short! I rang my agency and they said they would get on with the school about it and get it fixed. Sadly, they STILL haven't corrected this issue and my agency keeps saying they're trying to get in touch with someone about it. I wonder if they're hoping I will just forget or suck it up.

They're mistaken in that case.

I'm beyond frustrated. I know it's only a half-day, but my husband and I are skint as it is with a 17-month-old child. I haven't had any work since then outside of two one-offs and we just had to SORN our car because we couldn't afford the repairs after it failed the last MOT. Half a day's pay is a week's worth of groceries to us!

What are my options here?? Can I try contacting the school myself? Press my agency more? Contact the LEA? Do I even have any rights at all?

Please...help!!

OMG what a palaver you've had!

I would probably write a letter or email to your agency asking them to chase it up again - often things have more weight if they are in writing. Be polite and courteous but firm - you were told by the Head that you were going to be paid so she should pay!

If this brings no joy, I would send a similar letter to the Head - hopefully she'll have the decency to pay up straight away.

I suppose the last port of call would be the school governors and the LEA - hopefully it won't come to that.

BTW, did the Head sign any timesheet for you that week or was it done electronically? It would be great if you had that proof.

Fingers crossed

No, nothing was signed (our timesheets are electronic).

Don't get me wrong, I see how it initially could have been overlooked because I signed out in the office mid-day so I expected the person who confirms the timesheets just changed mine to reflect 1/2 a day. But the Head said to me "not to worry, you WILL be paid for a full day."

Are you in a Union? If not I would suggest you join one immediately. This is exactly the sort of thing they could help with. Best of luck.

Nope, not in a union. I wasn't aware there were unions in the UK, honestly. Knowing that now I will look into doing so once I get some money coming in again to pay dues. It's funny because I haven't had work this side of Easter. Kind of feels like I'm being blacklisted.
