Default Pay

Hi,
I've been working as a supply teacher since November, having been away from teaching for the last 3 years. I had previously done some supply back in the mid 90s, when I was usually paid between 6 and 7 hours per day, and sometimes even 7.5. So I was a bit annoyed to find that I'm only getting 5.58 for a day, which doesn't even cover the time I'm with the kids (they seem to be allowed in 10 minutes before the bell in the mornings!). A quick search of Union advice tells me that I should be asking for 1/195th of my 'annual' pay, but as a new supply teacher trying to break into the market in a small town, I don't really feel in a position to start quoting union advice.

Any advice/thoughts appreciated.

Hi

As I understand it you can't be paid more for a day's work than a "regular" teacher would be - hence the 1/195th ! And so taking this into account, for a full day's supply I get the equivalent of 5 hours. So unfortunately your 5.58 also sounds about right

Most supply staff are now paid a flat rate through an agency per day so an hourly rate doesn't come into it. And the flat rate is usually WELL below what you would get if paid to scale. I currently get £65 a day less than I would if paid to scale. That adds up to a lot of shortfall and I am really struggling even though I have plenty of work.
