Unhappy Aargh! Class from hell!!

As I turned up this morning at a new school, I was greated by lots of smiles and comments such as "Oh, you've got year 3 - good luck!"

I have never taught such a noisy class!! I tried loads of different strategies but didn't feel that anything was a roaring success at keeping the noise level down. They did complete all of the work I set (yes, pre-booked supply with no work left - great!) but just couldn't move from place to place without NOISE!!!

I had a star board for the great pupils - there were quite a few names by the end of the day although the naughty ones didn't show any interest in the board at all.
I introduced a noise meter which was only successful for a short period of time.
I then tried a different track and promised golden time, giving them 30 minutes to start, taking away minutes when they didn't listen. (We got down to 19 minutes and that was being REALLY kind!!)
I tried to be really positive with the children but today was one of those days when being positive didn't work.

I've got the same class next week - any more

s?!! How do you keep the noise level down? What works for you when you are only in a class for a short period and can't use threats/promises in the same way as the class teacher?

Oh Jane I feel for you because I have had a few, am back to one particular class thurs and still trying to sum up the energy

I've got to the point where I am not particulary warming towards them as they give me little to warrant it. I put names on the board for everyone who continues to talk over me and ignores what I'm saying, each time I refer to them it is -3 mins from their break/lunch (I carry it over to the classteacher if need be). They hate it but I don't care really (arrogant so and so's). I never go back on it either, always carry out what I promised, otherwise they see you as weak. I also use the school's yellow and red cards and don't mess about with them.

If there is something nice planned (that they enjoy I make them waste their time in the lesson- as in PE the other day, everytime they chatted or weren't listening I delayed their pe lesson.

Good luck and don't take any nonsense. Also start off with: this is how I work, hands up to speak, if I want your attention I will put my arm in the air and just really let them know what your expectations are. Good luck x

Don't be kind to them, unless they've given you a reason! We were always told at uni, with your first class, don't smile til after Christmas... that's a lot of supply days in one class!!

Try and figure out what the noise is. If it's about the work, don't worry, if it's about playground gossip, keep them in from the playground to do the work that they missed when they were gossiping in the lesson...

Be harsh before you're fair!!

Every minute they waste of yours being noisy, threaten to waste a minute of theirs at break and lunch time - then allow any quiet children out to play on time and hopefully one by one, they will add themselves to the quiet list!!! They are not safe on the list however, as they can go back on to the lost play list if they are noisy!

I will keep them in at playtime deducting 5 minute from play for each excessive amount of noise or bad behaviour, I keep all the class in as the ones who do behave soon let the ones that don't know! However, they can earn the time back and so if they are quiet get on with work etc time is put back on their playtime. It has always worked for me especially after the first time I kept them in!

I always hate punishing the class as a whole - although I do quite often!!

I talked to my son (aged 9) yesterday about my hard day and his 'advice' was not to be mean to everyone!!

He is well behaved and hates the injustice of 'playtime detention' for the class just because he's got some really naughty kids in his class. He's probably right!

I suppose you just have to decide on each occasion whether there are particular individuals who need a punishment or whether the whole class have been unruly!

s' to be exempt from a punishment does work generally and I think that's a good incentive too for the others. My star chart works in this way - the 'naughty' ones were jealous yesterday when the 'stars' got extra golden time at the end of the day so hopefully, the next time I use it with them, they will try to get their name on it. First days are always the worst!!
