Default Help Please!

Hi, I'm new here and have spent what feels like days wading through DfES publications to try to find what I'm looking for.Starting supply shortly, after teaching 3-4 year olds in a Nursery (so at least up to speed with EYFS) for 6 years.

What I need to knowand can't specifically find is how Numeracy and Literacy delivered now? From Yr1 up are they still taught as a complete hour, sectioned off into areas? And what about reception?

I hope someone can help me as my head is swimming from all the reading I've been doing.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome, I can't speak for everyone on here as it's different in some areas. But literacy and numeracy are taught in individual sessions and given an hour for each, it may not necessarily be in the morning and it could also be linked to IT (literacy for eg). I worked in reception for a while last year and numeracy and litercy were also taught separately, although it all focussed around a theme. For eg if learning about boats then for maths they could be cutting out shapes to stick on a boat and identifying the different shapes. Reception is usually linking it all together and lots of it is linked to CLL so it can spread across many areas. In another literacy lesson I read a story to a small group and they had to retell it while I

e observations of this. They could make little books with their drawings and add a few words etc.

I hope that you enjoy supply, once you start you will see exactly how it all works in your area. I've been into various schools and it varies from one to another. I wouldn't worry too much as it also depends on individual teachers too. Just enjoy the hols and once you start it will all fall into place. Others will also have useful advice on here.

Good luck

Thanks Audrey,

It's great to have somewhere to come to ask the daft questions and know there's a good chance you might actually get an answer.

Now if I can just have a virtual lesson in how to use a smartboard I'm sorted!

Cheers.

Whiteboards are wonderful things and there are loads of books that you can purchase that may help you gain some

s (Amazon have some useful ones). Again the more you use them and master the basics the easier it becomes. Saying that I went into a school the other day and could not fathom out how to write on the smartboard

and yet I was a whiz with them during my training and I've used them since (where has my brain gone). Although the prometheon ones appear more popular and I have got used to them more I suppose (I'm just making excuses now for my lack of brain cells).

Failing that just ask the sensible chn in your classes, they are truly amazing when it comes to whiteboards.
