Hi,
From many years as ft KS1 teacher and SENCO I feel that demonstrating a sound grasp of child development and early years practice is the first requirement. Children with general and more specific learning difficulties are often 2 years or more behind their peers. Concepts have been slow to form and need clear explanations and good infant practice 'hands on' experiences to develop oh and your excellent teaching skills ! I am covering for a deputy in a Junior school on a regular basis. Her SEN group are Y3's 14 children 5 with statements most functioning around Y1 level and struggling with the KS2 curriculum. Are you doing the planning? is this 1:1 IEP stuff or group work? What about TA's / support assistants? Same issues as general supply here they know more about the kids. Perhaps get access to files and IEP's to get background while respecting confidentiality. Actually I would say personality and enthusiasm every time but that probably conflicts with the 'safe recruiting' garbage.
Best of luck

I will know more this week and will let you know the outcome. I previously worked at the school as a LSA (years ago) but lots has changed in the way that it is run. They have also separated the older chn from the younger ones so that it is now purely primary.

Hi Phoenix
I went for my visit today to the SEN school and it was lovely too see so many familiar faces there, even some of the chn are familiar from 8 years ago when I worked there! The bad news though is that I have just missed out on a contract for a term which could have been ticked off my NQT year! Never mind, I'm sure it's for a reason

But I was taken around both schools to view the changes and have been assured that I will get a call for primary and secondary cover so

.

I was at a pretty tough school yesterday with a yr 3 class and I have to say I slept well last night. There are so many problems these days in maistream, on the plus side it is a school that I haven't worked at before so hopefully they will give me some more work.

Thanks again for the advice. When I visited there was lots of singing for registration going on in primary and cooking and number work at the secondary site. If I recall correctly, if you have QTS you can teach in secondary, even if it's just for supply-is this correct? I have come across it somewhere on a website. The HT seems happy with it.
