Default Reception class! help!

I am an NQT and the majority of my experience is KS2, but been called to do Reception.. I told the agency I'd rather not do Reception, but I guess it's money! It's been years since I was last in a Reception class.
There's no news about whether work is set or not. But even if it is set I'm still worried about whether I'd be pitching it at the right level.
All I have been given to go on is the following information:
Strong class management required. Daily Literacy and Maths input. Plus letters and sounds.

So basically I'm asking (no begging) for some help and advice since I'm so rusty in the early years.
Anyone want to suggest any behaivour management techniques I could use as the class is supposedly a hand full.?

Also I guess I should plan my own lit and maths and letters and sounds activities in case nothing is set. But I really could do with some help.
Could anyone more familiar with Reception PLEASE suggest some activities I could do for lit and maths? Also other activities to do perhaps after or in the afternoon. Perhaps stories, books, songs. I'm aware that with Reception there will be a lot of play, but guess I should have something up my sleeve anyway!
Really would appreciate help.

This is quite difficult to plan if you don't know where the children are at, especially where letters and sounds are concerned. Lit: draw a picture of something that you did in the holidays and write a caption to match. Lots of discussion possible for this beforehand and model writing caption. Scribe underneath where necessary. Numeracy: carpet time: number songs eg 12345 once I caught a

alive, order numbers to 10, 20, activity: collect small objects in containers children estimate how many in each one, then count them and find written number to match. Letters and sounds: take SATPIN revise sounds make into CVC words. Any odd minutes can be filled with nursery rhymes or stories.
If I want the childrens attention I always say '123 look at me' raising one arm and counting with my fingers. On the carpet this becomes '123 I can see (name) ready and waiting for me'. 'show me your hands' is also a good one for getting attention.
I'm in nursery tomorrow, I've been in KS2 for 2 terms! Not really looking forward to it but I know that the day will be planned for me, thank goodness. Let me know how you get on!

Hello and welcome, Wendy has given you lots of good advice there. I cant add to it, been a while since I was in a reception class too, but I would expect there to be planning available, esp if you have been booked in advance!

Hope all goes well - let us know!

Hi!

Can I re-kindle this thread please?

I have taken on a 1 day a week "jobshare" in a Foundation Stage class/Reception and had my first day with the little darlings today. It also happened to be the end of their first ever week all day every day so we were both pretty knackered before even stepping through the door.

I went in to the class knowing full well that I couldn't take ANYTHING for granted with them and I was right!

They were shell

when they saw me as they walked through the door, I had a boy roaring with tears throughout the whole of register so much so that kids were covering their ears and I couldn't hear myself think!

But overall it went well. I have a slight issue as I have a potentially autistic sevant boy who can't stand the sound of singing (er, what if I want to do nursery rhymes? or sing a spontaneous song?) and is way beyond the children in terms of number.

Has anyone got any action rhymes I can do with the kids - bit like singing but maybe it will distract him from the actual singing. So far I have got:
  • Heads, shoulders, knees and toes
Sorry, I'm rubbish!!!!

Also, any other good rhymes/songs to do with the other kids when he's not around:
  • Wheels on the bus
  • Incy wincy spider
  • 1-2-3-4-5

  • Humpty Dumpty
The other teacher next door has some amazing songs and I'm too shy to ask!!!

Circle games/parachute games is always good (if you have the space indoors somewhere, or access to a hall).

Hope that helps :-)
