Default Division by partitioning (chunking method)

I didn't know where to put this- and its actually nothing really to do with supply... but I need some advice so thought I'd post it and hope one of you lovely more experienced teachers might reply and help me!

Firstly, I've got an interview! Yey!! I didn't think I'd get it, as it shut about two weeks ago so I assumed I didn't get it, but I got an unexpected letter, yey! I'm really happy, as I've been sending off application after application and getting no response, so it's good when someone says yes!

Secondly, and this is the bit I need advice with!- I've been asked to teach 10 mins of numeracy to a small group of mixed ability year 4 children.
I've got to "teach the children to divide by partitioning the dividend into multiples of the divisor (chunking method)"
Ahh

It says I won't have an interactive whiteboard or OHprojector, just normal whiteboard and pens. Hmm...

Thanks for any advice in advance!

OMG! Sounds like a tough one!

I mean.... Wow... congratulations on getting an interview Sam!! Well done!!!!

Ok, back to the potential toughy... not a problem after thinking for a few minutes, more a challenge...

First of all, you cannot possibly teach the children to divide by partitioning the dividend into multiples of the divisor in 10 minutes! They want to know you can explain things clearly using appropriate vocabulary (divisor/multiple etc. as well as partition), and want to see you interact with the kids I'm sure.

Very, very practical may be the way to go....
You might want to first of all gauge quickly how well they know their tables?! 2x and 5x probably best to stick to, maybe 4x, 3x for more able... wake up 1 min activity where you say 3 lots of 2 and they have number fan/individual whiteboards to show you answer?

Demonstrate (use volunteers?) the sum and then write up on board:

Bean bags thrown into hoops to start... like 12 / 3 = 4... red, yellow and a blue hoop to highlight 3.
Then go smaller physically - Multilink cubes/Smarties/Counters/Plastic frogs/anything you can get hold of and have some lovely large hands/lily pads drawn/printed onto A3 paper to share them onto (give them a real life situation, number of frogs on each lily pad must be the same so that it balances?) If you've realised the least able by now you may be able to challenge them to do another one with the smarties/frogs while you do some pen and paper questions with more able using the whiteboard to demonstrate?

Ok, how to bring in the whole divide by partitioning the dividend into multiples of the divisor bit... practice practice practice!! Practice your basic chunking yourself and turn around what I wrote above, thinking how to apply it to chunking, coz I'm sure that what's above is proper division, not chunking, so it just needs turning around a bit! Hmmm... seriously, can't think about division on a Friday night but wanted to give you an

. So, chunking is ike instead of doing 60 divided by 4 you'd do (40/4)+(20/4) yeah? I'm not sure of the level you're at when you're in year 4 though... Do they still divide with numberlines? Do they do long division yet? Ahh, I've taught year 3 before but it was over a year ago and I can't remember, and the NNS and PNS doesn't really mention dividing by chunking.
Are chunking and partitioning the same thing?

As far as I can think now...

it's all timestables...

60 / 4 =

the kids might know 10 lots of 4 is 40, so they know there're 10 lots, and then there's 20 left, and they should know there's 5 lots of 4 in 20... none remaining, so they've got 10 lots, and 5 lots, so 15 altogether...

Partitioning is... 157 = 100 + 50 + 7 so you can work with the numbers more easily.

, I'm feeling more confident now, and I've got a little plan in my head that I'm going to type up. It's just so hard to do in 10 mins! Apparently I'm good at interviews... so fingers and toes and everything else crossed!! x

It seems to appeal to them when you call it 'Chunky Monkey' division too!

I didn't get the job... they said the woman they chose fitted better into the ethos of their school, what a load of rubbish, they probably already had her in mind haha... not THAT upset though as i know a job I reeeeeally want is coming up soon, and if I'd of got that one and saw the advert for this other post I'd of been really gutted! Oh and I crashed my car on the way home, haha... oops! When I say crashed, i mean lightly tapped the woman in front, who's claiming for a bit of everything... why do people do that?? Grr.... lol xx
