Default New child in my class

In three weeks 3 children have left-nothing personal. In the fourth week I am informed that I get a new girl starting. She is Polish, speaks no English and from what the Bus manager saw of her may be quite a handful. Fingers crossed I will get some extra support in the classroom.
Can't wait

LOL I did a teaching practice in the school next to a uni once, it was a bit like that! Visiting lecturers had trouble speaking English, let alone their poor little kids!

I did have a visit from the specialist teacher though each time one arrived... no extra support in class, except told to make loads of pictures for signs, times of day etc. Really

me how much the other children just took it in their stride and seemed to be able to 'talk' to the children no matter what language they spoke (year 3), they just all got on and played, and seemed to get to know the characters of the kids so quickly

I totally echo what Nutty said - we are the school that the uni sends foreign students/ lecturter to, so we are getting on average about 4 new children a week - mostly eastern european. We have a SEAL teacher coming in twice a week to teach the children and support us. But they do settle really easily and pick up the conventions and basic language. I found on TES resources polish flashcards for things aroudn the classroom and common words (sorry don't have direct link - seach for polish flashcards or something)
Good luck, al the ones we've got seem to have really good skills so far i.e handwriting, keenness to get on - despite the fact they still wouldn't be in school (yr1) if they were at home!
