Default escape advice request

Hi all,

I wasn't sure where to put this. So sorry, it's not upbeat.

I'm really hating supply teaching, want to stop it and need to find an alternative supplementary income that's got nothing to do with teaching. I'm not eligible for working tax credits because last year my gross was over their limit. I'm also taxed base rate for supply because I've been building up a freelance (non teaching) business over the last four years and lost my personal allowance to supply last tax year. It means my financial incentive for enduring until hometime has diminished. But I need something to keep my overdraft within its limit when I wait for payments from freelance clients. That's what supply's been for me.

I'm what they don't want. I don't have time or desire to prep emergency lessons because I don't get PPA time like a fulltimer. The kid's are often lovely but I'm bored with it! If I were good at teaching I'd come back to it fulltime. I don't fit in. I don't feel any job satisfaction- just total exhaustion at the end of the day.

Does anyone have any escapee tales? I want to get out before I'm do a Reggie Perrin on the way home.

I'm off to sell all my stuff on ebay...

best wishes,

WBT

First of all... you'll get your tax back when you do your self-assessment return... can file it anytime from April, so now's probably as good a time as any! I'm going to file mine, first day off school, then I'll get the money in time for a possibly-in-the-pipeline holiday!

Escaping teaching? Er, I ran a hotel for a year in the Lakes, I've been a proof reader and an administration officer, and an analysist for a team of facilitators... bit off the cuff but all enjoyable in their own way!

As Nutty says, you can claim tax back - I got a nice cheque in the post the other week for nearly £900 for overpaid tax....

As for escaping supply, I did a six month stretch as an admin officer in a school, but also did some supply for them. It was very enjoyable, but also hard work. It gave me a break from the day-to-day stuff, and gave me time to assess my own needs. I realised that the day-to-day work was getting me down (mainly placed in challenging schools), and wasn't what I wanted to do on a long-term basis. I also found out what it was like to work in a school for an extended period of time.

I now mainly work for the one school, and just do the odd day for the agency (no last minute calls!). Having been qualified for 2 years, and doing supply for most of that time, I now know that I DO want to teach, but the stress of last minute calls is not for me!
