Default Quick question - please advise

Hi guys,

I've started my 3 day week this week which I was told before I accepted the assignment until the end of the session, that there was no planning involved. The normal class teacher came to me today and told me that there would be a meeting later this week to discuss next weeks plans. I'm now a little worried that I've been tricked into taking up a post that involves planning, otherwise wouldn't have accepted it (time restraints etc.)

Does anyone know where supply teachers stand on this? Should this be expected? Or do I have a right to opt out if I'm asked.

Any help would be really appreciated..not part of union yet.

Hi,

Bit cheeky to tell you there's no planning, and then you find out there is! However, there could be a mistake... HT tells you no planning, random teacher tells you about the meeting thinking you were expecting to be involved etc., or it could literally mean 'to discuss next week's plans', rather than actually write them - many schools have them on the computer from last year/year before etc., and just tweak them a bit to suit before printing them off... Could be the time when they get the

ying all done ready... Or, worst case scenario for you, you could actually end up doing some planning!

I personally think you have to go with that... as a supply teacher you're expected to take on what the normal class teacher would normally do (obviously, on a day supply in a new school etc., they wouldn't expect you to do parents' evenings and reports if the teacher would normally have done them then!)

As I see my circumstances (paid through LEA 1/195th of salary per day), if I worked 195 days in the year, I would earn same amount as a full-time teacher, so why shouldn't I be expected to do planning etc., as they do?

There are arguements against, major one for example is no PPA time given (how's this: I am contracted to do 4.5 days a week at the moment, and no-one has thought to give me 0.45 days PPA!!! - BUT, I'm very fortunate in that I don't have any planning etc. to do!)

Is there more than one Y2 teacher? The normal class teacher, if they're doing the other two days still, will probably just want to run through the plans with you, or/and the other Y2 teacher. Can you opt out? I guess that depends on how willing you are to rock the boat... If it was a condition of your employment due to time retrictions on your part, definitely talk to the HT about it... You'd have to really explain in terms of what was said to you before you accepted the job, rather than explaining you haven't the time... And join a union!!!

My money's on it being that the teachers have the plans in draft from last year, and they just want to go over it make sure it's ok, make sure they haven't forgotten that the theatre company is coming in on the Wednesday etc., etc., and it'll take hardly any time at all, just so they can print it off in best!

Thanks, Nutty.

I think from the plans I've been following up until now that they're written, not

ied or printed out from last year. I do feel kind of cheated because the reason I'm doing supply in the first place is because I do not have enough time in my life right now do be doing planning, parents evenings, after school clubs etc because of family commitments. If I did have the time, I'd have stayed on at my last school as a permanent teacher.

I already work more than enough hours just covering someone else's class: preparation, marking, follow up notes, etc and really do not want the extra workload (been there, got the

I'm hoping you're right, though, and that it's just to discuss the plans - not to help put them together. Fingers crossed I haven't

I'd certainly not be afraid to talk to the HT (presuming they're who said no planning in the first place) about it if you're not happy after the meeting...

I can't believe people still hand-write plans! I know things change, but it's so much easier to do them if they're on the computer already!

I agree!! There's no point re-inventing the wheel if it's all been done already.

Still, I'm trying not to nit-pick at things I think could be done better when I go into different schools - sometimes I have to bite my lip! Unless the input is welcome, of course, but you never know....

Hi Money

I was in this situation last summer term, teaching 3 days a week in Nursery, but doing no planning. The DH did the planning, but we had a meeting each week with myself and the NNEBs to discuss what we had covered, what we felt needed more input and what we were ready to move on on. Then the DH went and did the planning and

ied it to all of us.

As you're doing the actual teaching your input will be useful to the planning process, just hope you foind it's a similar experience to mine.
