As you know, I teach Deaf pupils and have level 1 and 2 BSL. I love it and get so many comments about my signing ability!!!!! In a good way I mean! I can only work as an unqualified teacher of deaf children until July so im making the most of it. Not ready just yet to commit to the PG course as it's two years!!!! Anyway, I can't wait for Deaf club next month as it's a Deaf Kareoke night!!!! Great fun signing all my fav. songs! Any requests?

ly there wasnt enough interest and so it was cancelled a week b4 starting, gutted! is BSL as good as or beta than makaton? ive always wanted to learn and now seems a good time, but there are no makaton courses in or around bristol, so maybe ill have more luck with BSL...

I did a tiny bit of makaton for working with a non-speaking autistic child many moons ago... I don't know how common it is outside of special needs schools??

I learned Makaton many years ago during inclusion classes with a local SEN school.
I now use it frequently during pre-school teaching (my Thursday and Friday jobs) and I love it! Makaton is very easy for the children to pick up as most of it 'makes sense'.

It is like any language though - you need to use it frequently otherwise you forget it (although for some very strange reason, I can still remember the Latin verbs I learned when I was 12!!)

I've never really tried BSL although I know the alphabet. I would love to be able to have a full conversation across a crowded pub using sign language!
