Default Glorified baby sitting?

I've just st.arted doing supply work at secondary schools whilst applying for teaching jobs to complete my NQT.
My first experience of supply was at my old secondary school covering a teacher I knew was very disorganised.

No work was set (which I expected as I had told the teacher had called in sick that morning) but that wasn't the problem.

I left school 4 years ago, and this particular teacher had already given up caring long before then.
Work set in their class is usually answering questions from a text book. Most of the classes I covered during that day of supply said they usually don't do any work in lessons. The teacher allows pupils to listen to music during the classes, which I would not except in one of my own classes.

How do you teach a class where the pupils aren't usually taught?
Is supply teaching just glorified baby sitting - mak.ing sure the pupils don't kill eachother?

Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoyed the day and managed to get some work out of all of the classes (achievement!!), but how do you handle classes when the teacher you are covering has more laid back ethics than yourself?

I think you aim to make a difference, show them what a lesson should be like, and hopefully they'll sit up and demand to be taught by their regular teachers! Be an inspiration!!
