Default Secondary Supply

Since most of the stuff here is primary, here's my list of secondary school time fillers.

English;

Use the initial letters of your full name to describe yourself, e.g.
C= Caring with my friends
H= Happy when I play
R= Reading books every day
I= Inspired by music
S= Swimming is my hobby
etc.

Maths;

Using squared paper, Draw x and y axes and number the squares 1 to 10 on each axis.
Now draw a dot to dot style picture using the corners of the squares writing down the coordinates for each point in order. Next give your coordinates to someone else and see if they can plot your picture. (hours of fun once they get the hang of it but always useful to have some pre-prepared examples!)

Science;

(ks4) If they're all paying attention, split them into 2 teams- draw a 4x4(or bigger or smaller) grid and fill it in with different letters (a-v) and play biology-blockbusters;

adolescence the time from child to adult
aerobic respiration using oxygen
anaerobic respiration without oxygen
alimentary canal the food tube from mouth to anus
animal one

My other favourite is to get them to draw a picture of their bedroom/school/classroom/town/house/street as it is now. Then to draw the same place but showing how it would look;

Before and after the industrial revolution.
Before and after a war.
If they converted to Judaism/Islam/Christianity/Rastafarianism etc.
If aliens took over.
If there was an earthquake.

Or something else to fit the subject. If there is time I get some of them to explain their drawings to the rest of the class, or write about them if they finish quickly.

It is a challenging list, I always end up changing the questions on the spot to make them easier/harder.

e me realise that life is so short, I want to enjoy my free time with my family and friends.
I'm also finding being back on supply after a year with my own class really hard. I miss the feeling of having colleagues to rely on, and I miss knowing the children and their parents. i'm also hating the uncertainty of when I'll work and how much money i'm going to have.

The only thing that is worrying me about the job potentially is behaviour management. Obviously i can say about having experience of the curriculum and being able to teach and assess etc but behaviour management of older children is something different to primary. What sort of strategies do you use with children that I could perhaps use if an interview came about?

Love the science blockbusters. I'll have to try it. You could do that for any subject and any ability really couldn't you.

Hi Danfur, sorry it's taken me a while to reply. The main thing with behaviour is to find out what the other teachers do, there will usually be a school policy or at least a departmental policy, it's usually something like;

first offence name on board,
one tick for second offence,
third offence and they're out.
trouble with this is you have to know their names quickly.

Some schools use a similar system where the kids are shown a yellow card, then a red card, which gets over the names issue but you have to remember who's been naughty!
It's important to use something the other teachers use, especially for supply work as it's more familiar to them and they respect you for following the rules.

The other really important thing is to learn the names of the heads of year and pretend that you're pretty good friends who will definately be meeting for a coffee at sometime today.

There will also be a referal system where you can make a note of an incident and pass it on to a senior colleague to deal with. Especially useful if you're in and out of different schools. Again you need to find out what it's called and let the kids know that you're aware of the system.

Scarily alot of schools have emergency buttons. Either a button on the wall or in the bromcom register. If you press this one of the senior management usually turn up.

Big kids aren't usually that bad, they just need continuity and consistency, same as primary I'm sure. The main thing is to stay calm, try not to shout, and pop your head round to the teacher next door if you're stuck!

It's an electronic register. Every member of staff has an A5 sized box with a keypad and display screen, you type in the period, your initials and a "?" and your register appears on screen!

It's good because the school can keep track on truanting patterns, you can also use it to enter marks and it all goes straight to a central database in the office.
Sadly no use for your personal records as you don't get a paper
