Default Year 6 children

so so mouthy they have no respect for teachers or each other. Can't imagine what they are like at home.

Then they put the water works on when they get into trouble, thats not going to wash wuth me.

Think this is the last time I'm going to agree to do a year 6 class, was only a morning but i had enough of them by break.

They have grown on me!

Didn't like them at first, but know do them in my 2 regular schools - one is a middle school so they are not 'top' of the school, and the other I have been teaching them since they were in year 4 so know me well.

Other schools - no only teach them if I am desperate!

I really like Yr 6, but I can see why other people don't. I usually go home from the first day with a new Yr 6 group hating them all, but once I get to know them (and they get to know me) I really enjoy them. Just spent two days with a new group of Yr 6s, and due back with them on Monday. They are quite a bad-tempered lot, with one complete headbanger (you always get one, but this ones worse than usual), but now I can tell them apart, most of them are lovely (lots of them in floods of tears today as it was 11+ notification day)

My favourite year, but could see why it'd be anyone's worst too!

A lot depends on the school/catchment area (crap catchment area = great community spirit!)

It also depends on the year they were born... last year's year 6, hell, next years, even worse, this year, lovely, present y4 lovely, seems like alternate years are nice/not nice y6s to me!

I agree with Nutty that it does depend on where the school is. I used to teach a Year 6 class regularly in a really down and out area where there were about 5 headbangers in the class (ALL with ADHD/social/behavioural issues) although not statemented. One of the boys was also very sexually aware and couldn't stop swearing and making advances on the student helper in the class. He refused to leave the room even for the Head and only left when his father was called.

Now I look back on it and wonder how I did it! Now when I'm offered Year 5/6, I'll turn it down and hope for something else. I used to snap them up!

Having said that, I taught Year 6 in a lovely area yesterday at a school I used to work at and they were noisy but polite and no headbangers!

Would do it if you were closer!

I'm teaching Thursday morning... but have the afternoon with lovely OH in a meeting for new company! Can't wait... it's with the local enterprise team, about grants, freebie help etc. Don't think we've got a cat in hell's chance of getting any grants though, as we don't have to buy any capital and can't yet take anyone on but ourselves. It seems they're only interested in manufacturing industry start-ups, even looks like we won't get a marketing grant, as they can't put it up against a piece of machinery. We've spent £manyK on software, but that doesn't count... I bet it would if we didn't live in 6-finger farmer territory!

I need to think of a way to include a tractor or two in the business plan...

Whether I teach Year 6 does depend on the school/area. Just turned one down in a tough school although there's only about 21 children in the class. It is well known for being a hard class so I'm not too guilty about saying no. On the other hand I have two regular schools where I love teaching the Year 5/6s. The children, although some are cheeky which I don't mind a bit, are great fun and helpful. Although I dislike marking the literacy!
