Default Hello from Australia

Hello all,

I'm starting my first year of secondary teaching next week, and getting quite excited. When I say starting, I should add 'hopefully' because I'll be starting off with supply - or CRT, as we call it - work, and hope to get some phone calls!

I found this forum while looking around for resources for my supply bag, and I'm very impressed with all the ideas and resources! Even though many resources are UK based, I think I can tweak most for my state's curriculum.

Anyway, I'm off to have a proper look around. :)

Hi Miss C
Good luck with your CRT work (does that stand for Casual Relief Teacher?) - what is your subject specialism?

Hi Miss C,

I am also in Australia and just starting out as a supply primary school teacher after 6 years out of teaching. It's a scary thought! After having looked through some of the stuff on this forum, I'm sure that it'll be transferable over to the Australian system no worries.

Good luck!

Default West Aussie Here

Hi, I am also in Australia and having just graduated from Uni last year, I have decided that I would start off doing relief teaching as opposed to trying to seek a permanent position... Though I know it is going to be a lot harder, and I will have to learn to think on my feet and be very flexible - I think the hard work will pay off and when (if) I do decide to secure a full time position it will make me a better teacher all round. I have just discovered this website and love the resources and tips.... I know I will be a frequent visitor...

I have my very first assignment on Monday with a kindy / pp class - have no

what to do, as I mainly have worked in middle to upper primary so this is going to be an interesting start....

Lets just hope it is the start of more relief work

Thanks for the welcome! I haven't been back in a while as I was actually offered a full-time position the next day and had to devote time to that.

I have actually resigned that position last week due to personal reasons and the immense pressures of starting a first year teaching position with a week to plan for five classes, three of which were completely outside of my method areas! It was all a bit too much for me and I felt it was best for my mental health and the students' learning for the rest of the year for me to step aside.

I'm now back to the original plan of doing supply/CRT, but I am more positive about it now - before my job offer I saw it as a last resort and not "proper teaching" but now I see it as a valuable way to increase my skill set whilst being able to leave work at work and enjoy other things in my life!

Nice to see some other Australian teachers on here! I look forward to chatting more with all of you.

Hi,

What part of Australia are you from? I love your country - How easy/hard would it be for a UK teacher to get a job in Australia?

Good Luck!

Jan

Hello,

I'm in Australia too! And I'm starting supply teaching this week! I'm getting a bit nervous... been off work for 2 years having babies... and haven't actually taught since finishing my teaching degree!

I'm really not organised yet - I'm far more preoccupied with getting my children settled into childcare!!

Its going to be a shock to my system working

Hi furryonion! Welcome to the forum...

I'm very occupied with getting my child settled into childcare at the moment, I'm not going to work, but one morning a week think it's good for him (and I get to do - housework!!)

Hope the supply goes well, remember to take every available moment to mark work so you're not at the school until late...

Hi Jan

I'm in Victoria. I really couldn't tell you how easy or hard it would be for you to get a job here - it would vary immensely state by state I'm sure. As for Victoria, it would depend if you were primary or secondary trained and what your method areas are (for secondary). If you're maths/science then it's your lucky day/month/year - apparently there's a shortage. Having said that, I don't know anything about the legalities etc of coming in from OS. For Victoria, you could check out the DEECD (education.vic.edu.au) site or the VIT (vit.vic.edu.au) site.

Hi to furryonion as well!
