Default Returning to teaching...after a LONG break!

Hi All
I last taught in 1983.. (is this a record?), Secondary Physics and CDT.

I've been a youth worker since, 11/19yrs, including some inputs in classroom situations, ASDAN, AQA units, Drugs Ed NEET and PRU and other PHSE.

I've been 'let go' by my LEA as a Yoof Worker, and been head hunted by supply agencies, probably as I've a shortage subject, current Enh. CRB and GTC eligibilty. I actually posted my CV for NVQ work as I've got the A1.

So..

Default Almost ashamed to admit......

After hearing about peeps not getting work, I've just turned down my first offer of a day's work, nearby, in subject, a good school!

In mitigation, my agency hadn't told me I was 'live' for work and I think I got stagefright when the call came in- I did say I was available otherwise-

I really must get my head round this!

Any thoughts?

Nick

It must be quite scary after such a long break but you have been doing related things in that time. Why not ask to go in a voluntary capacity to get your feet again. I don't know if this works in secondary schools but it is very useful in primary ones. One bonus of working supply is that you can choose when to work! Now you know you are 'active' it won't be such a shock when the morning call comes!

Hi Nick,

1. Probably but then you have to be slightly insane to be a teacher anyway!

2. Should be ok - but beware, sometimes you are booked for Year 6 but end up in Reception as a different teacher is ill!

(Unless, maybe you've got middle schools in your area?)

I'm sure you'll be fine once you've got your first day done.

Gosh - 1983 was the year I qualified!

In fact I did not go into teaching at the time, but after 22 years in the Civil Service and enforced career change came up (well, it was that or move to Wales!).

I did a Return to Teaching course (you get paid to do it - contact your LEA) and signed up with an agency at the same time. Within a week I was teaching... And not in primary (where I was qualified), but in a secondary school... teaching PE...

And three years later I'm still doing here!
