Question Back in the class after 5 years.

Hi everyone,

I am new to this website and need some help. After taking 5 years off to raise my children I have been booked to teach a Y1 class on 25.11.10. I only did mty NQT year in a Reception class before having my kids so feel really scared of going back to the classroom.
Do you have any Y1 Literacy and Numeracy plans that I could look at? Not sure what the structure of a lesson is any more. Do you need to cover word level, sentence level, etc work in each of them? Also, what do you put in your supply bag?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ivana

Hi Ivana,

Stop worrying - things haven't changed much in the last 5 years, kids are still kids!!

Almost certainly, there will be planning left for you - as a supply teacher, you are not expected to write any plans. I follow the class teacher's plans as closely as I can (some are harder to follow so I just use common sense if unsure!) and then I leave feedback/notes for the teacher on how the day went.

As for what to take in with you, there have been loads of posts about that so have a quick search. I tend to take in a

of favourite books and some pens (so I can take the register without a pen search!) - if there is no planning (rare!) I can normally base a day's lessons around a book.

is to have a stock of fillers - how are you going to occupy those 5 minutes before assembly/ keep the early finishers busy etc? Songs are normally a good option, particularly in KS1 - again, have a look at previous posts.

Good luck and make sure you let us know how you get on.

Default First day went well

Hi 'Janeb',

So I managed to get through my first day and the school even asked me to come again the next day. However, there was no planning left for me even though it had been booked 2.5 weeks in advance! On top of that my Satnav broke in the middle of my journey which meant that I had to ask several people in order to get to the school! I had never been so stressed in my life. Luckily I left very early so still managed to get there at 8.15!

Thanks for your support.

Ivana
