Default I dont want to work in reception

Hi all,

I am new to this site and have been doing supply for the last 3 years. I am yet to complete my NQT and hope to secure a job by september. I applied for work via the local pool system and had been given a verbal offer for year 1 class. I was told by the head that she would send the contract in the post.... 4 weeks ago! (Not received!). I rung the school on friday whom have said that they no longer have a vacancy in year one and would like to offer me a position in reception instead.

I told them during the interview that I had no desire to work in reception as I find it a difficult area due to not fully understanding the difference with my role and the nursery nurses. Also as I am used to teaching year 5 and 6. I told the head that I would get back to her on Monday but am thin

of rejecting the offer
....help!

My degree title in Early years specialism but I havent had as much experience with this year group....bizzarely as it sounds. I want a job, I want to complete my NQT YEAR very soon but I really dont want to be in reception. I am a single parent of three children aged 7, 4 and 3. I just want a year group with a bit more structure and where the children are slighly older.

Should I keep the job or turn it down?

Mary

Hi Mary, tough call!

I never wanted to work in YR either. I'd always done Y5 & Y6. But then I had a half day a week contract, and I think, although I prefer upper KS2, I could do it full time. I went in with the wrong attitude. I treated them the same way as I treated the older kids in the end, giving them jobs, being open with them, and serious, as well as the fun stuff. And they loved it! They felt very grown up and important.

Easy for me to say now, but I'd go for it... if only to complete your NQT year... chances to complete it are few and far between.

Oh, and I never came across nursery nurses in R, it's full on curriculum stuff really, I had TAs who also worked in Y6!

And I would kill to work with this age group! I would take the post and get the NQT year out of the way. As an NQT you can only do supply for 5 terms so having done it for 3 years you should only be paid as an unqualified teacher and given supply if no other qualified teacher is available. Sucks doesn't it. I worked supply for 5 years before I got caught out and I am now wor

as an HLTA until I can find a permanent post to complete my induction.

to several people, Family, friends, teachers, headteacher, NQT pool support etc. Thankyou so much for your replies! I am happy to have a job and I'm just happy that I have the chance to complete my NQT year. It cant be as bad as what I initially thought I guess. The headteacher called me back an hour a half later to tell me that I will be meeting the parents next week. Wow! talk about jumping in the deep end.

I have been very lucky to have secured supply work for the last 3 years although I never worked full time so I guess if you were to add all the days up it would probably consist of around 5 terms.

Just wanted to say thankyou for your advice!

with Reception age children and you'll be fine, especially as you have young children yourself.
I haven't had any problems with nursery nurses - they are primarily trained to care for the children rather than to teach them so don't be intimidated!
