new to supply
Hi, I'm new to supply, having done 4 serarate days only in KS2 and foundation. I'm an experienced Y3/Y4 teacher, and gave up because I was knackered, and chose to do 2 days supply a week. I've read all the posts about behaviour management, and although I never expected supply teaching to be easy, the Y5 class I had yesterday has really undermined my confidence! I'd used about every available strategy I could think of for managing their behaviour, yet by the end of the day, their behaviour was so bad, I had to send a child to find a senior management teacher for help. The others days I worked in foundation were so easy. I can't believe how bad yesterday was. The school was in a very deprived area, with no cohesive discipline policy, (eg, 'if they play you up give me a shout') long periods of teaching before breaks, (no morning assemblies, lunch at 12.40).
Has anyone had a really bad experience like this?

Hi and welcome! In answer to your question.......YES and in Y5 too. Come to think of it most of my worst days have been in Y5. Could it be the middle child syndrome? Not the oldest in school but not the youngest either and so need make themselves noticed in other ways? It is difficult going into a class of unknown children and getting the same from them as their teacher (or perhaps you were). There is one advantage though you can choose if you want to go back!

Sorry to hear you had a tough day. Schools vary so much, take heart that you don't have to go to that school again. Supply teaching has different pressures to class teaching, not knowing names and the lack of relationship with children and parents does make it tough so don't despair. If you apply to schools yourself instead of using an agency, you can check them out at the same time then, hopefully, you'll get some regular schools. If the retail therapy hasn't worked, try chocolate and wine To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Rotten day on supply
hi Ruby Tuesday, feeling much better following retail therapy and lots of chocolate...think I've got things more in perspective now, and ready for another bash at supply after the Easter break. Hi also to all other newbies, and especially anyone in Manchester area. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Glad you're feeling better! Shopping, wine or chocolate? Or all three?
I'm in the Manchester area so you never know, you might end up in my school!

Hi Heavenlee... I'm assuming that the retail therapy involved lots of chocolate?! Bargain Easter Eggs?!
Let us know how your next day goes...

I used to religiously (no pun intended) buy Easter eggs at the reduced price until I realised that if you melted them down, they were still more expensive than a bar of Galaxy!!!!

Our Tesco's didn't reduce any but High School Musical ones! Well, the odd 50p off here and there, but only if they were over a fiver to start... where did they all disappear off to??
