Default Nursery teaching interview

Hi all,

I have an interview for my first teaching post for a nursery school teaching job next monday the head said in the morning I will be observing the nursery staff, environment and children and then during the interview i will be asked about good practice in the nursery and then what i would try to improve?

Any tips well appreciated such as, how to calm nerves? what heqads may look for? what would put people off? how to stand out? what to put in my portfolio?

Thank you x

Gosh, good luck with that, and absolutely well done on getting an interview!!

That in itself should give you a confidence boost!

I've spent half a day in a nursery professionally, and didn't have a clue what I was doing to be blunt!

Nerves: breathing and relishing in the fact that you got to interview stage where many didn't

What heads may look for: professional attitude, team player, open, honest

Put people off: poor interaction with the kids, if you get the opportunity in the am, take it and show them how the kids take to you quickly / well

How to stand out: don't be a wallflower... I watched a girl at interview once who, while in the staffroom at lunchtime got up to make her brew, and offered to make anyone else one too, and cleared a few plates away while she was there - and she got the job! Still at my old school 3 years later! Other interviewees had sat in silence through lunch understandably scared (NQT post) to death, but the interview panel were all in for lunch too, and the other girl who did make an effort and talk to teachers etc. was given regular supply and part-time contracts through the year.

Portfolio: I've only ever taken one once, I was asked to take in pieces of children's work that I thought was of a high standard. One piece of Y6 work in there wasn't obviously high quality (

e sure all the rest was all top level 5), it was from an SEN child and was outstanding coming from him. Trouble was, I didn't get chance to explain my decision, they just took it away to browse through... so label well just in case....

Let us know how you get on!

Thank you. I definately need to get over the nerves as soon i as go into the school and try and act natural around the nursery which i believe will be difficult especially if they allow all candidates in at the same time. I'll give it my best shot.
I'l let you know thanks
