Hello from a newbie!
Hi there
I have just qualified (although I am 34!) and am about to start some supply. I am REALLY scared of going into a school I don't know though! Any tips gratefully received!

Hi and welcome Milliebear and a big congratulations on qualifying. Remember why you passed the course and deserve to be a teacher, never lose sight of that.
Have a good look through the many different threads on here, they all offer advice, chocolate or jokes that may prove useful. It is a bit worrying to begin with but once you have been into a school and taught your first day it gets easier (honest), especially if you get asked back as that improves your confidence.
Have you registered with agencies yet, by the sound of it you should only register with a few, (others will know more). Have a number of fillers/worksheets for each year group to keep things ticking along (in a file or on your memory stick), check 'the contents of my bag' thread for more useful items. It does vary with each individual though.
Always reward yourself after your first day/week and especially after a rough day. I have also put voicemail on my mobile incase I miss calls. Don't sit by the phone waiting for it to ring (give yourself a To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. I do sometimes accept bookings for afternoons etc later on in the day, depending on what I am up to really.
Good luck you will be fine, trust me we've all been there. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Hi milliebear, welcome to the forum!
Going into somewhere you've never been before is hard, imagine going into a pub alone and having to talk to people there... not easy! School's are easier than that though, the staff have to talk to you, and are generally lovely with it!
It'd be great practice for you to hand-deliver your CV/covering letter to all the schools in your area, you get to meet at least the secretary, get a feeling for the palce, get to know how long it takes you to get there, get your face seen etc... I've written about this loads on here, so have a look through! Usually I'm saying how good it is over emailing schools or joining agencies, but it's also great for building confidence and getting you into the habit of walking into a school... you can always phone first and ask if they'd be interested in seeing your CV with a view to doing supply for them in the future, another confidence booster...

That's what I do too!
I always make a list of things I should do if my agencies do not call me. So today I guess I will be filling application forms, going through the MFL framework in case I have answers for the ones I previously send and...clean the To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Thanks so much for all your advice. I have started to put together a big file of worksheets and To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. s. It's KS1 that worries me - way out of my comfort zone! I turned down a day recently because I didn't feel ready, but am more prepared now.
I am in Derbyshire, and have been advised to approach schools directly. Am waiting for my LA CRB check to come back, then I will drive round all the local schools. My friend has done the same and said they were really iterested when they realised she carries her own CRB check - To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Don't want to rain on your parade, and I actually think its an excellent idea to carry around a CRB, but technically you are supposed to have a CRB for each employer/institution. However, I think showing you have a current CRB should be beneficial.
Though I much prefer KS2, KS1 is not so bad, its just nursery that's really evil! Of course, area / catchment and how well the school is managed is probably a more major factor!

And I wouldn't wait til you've got your CRB check back... it could take months... illegal/immoral as it was, 13 schools had me working supply before anyone even asked about mine! I knew I was clear, and wasn't going to turn down the money!

Is that a legal requirement though? My understanding was that 'transferring' checks is at the discretion of the school/borough. Derbyshire LA have come up with this and have informed the schools in their LA jurisdiction that they can accept this CRB check (applied for by Derbyshire LA themselves) without needing to apply for another, unless it is out of date. Isn't there a computerised checking system from September as well?
