Default Greetings Everyone! Advice needed!

Hi folks!!

I'm an Australian teacher (3 years exp in Catholic Sec School in Aus + 9 months supply in UK) and I'm so glad I've found this forum!

I must admit that while I'm a good supply teacher (a good teacher, period) and I've done my best to get my head around the UK system, I'm a bit at sea still with this whole agency thing.

I'm signed up with a

, namely Capita, Celsian and Teaching Personnel, and have had work with all of them - it has been patchy in frequency and quality of schools - I have recently been asked by a school to stay on full time teaching Year 4 until Christmas. Which is great, don't get me wrong, I'm so grateful. But I'm doing a lot of work, planning wise (the teacher took all her resources and plans of what she had already done so I'm flying blind a bit), extra curricular activities, staff meetings etc for the same rate as if I were simply day to day (for which I have lessons already planned in my bag of tricks).

I understand that teachers do it for love, not the money and that we all have planning and marking etc but it ticks me off that the agency charges the school a huge fee and pay me less than half for twice the amount of work I do on a day to day basis. Do you have any advice? The agency has flat out refused to change my rate (100 quid a day) and did not tell me up front what the job would be or the rate for the whole half term or that there was an Ofsted inspection on my second day!!

I once looked at a school in a similar situation, when I asked the HT about the rate she said 'I know what I will pay the agency' so I didn't bother. Instead I contined with day to day supply and applied for a job with an authority.

If you are unhappy about the money situation I think you will just have to stop doing long term supply and only accept day to day supply, you don't have a contract so you have no obligation to the school and can leave when you want! If they really want to keep you they could offer you a temporary contract (though they would probably have to pay your agency a fee).

If you want a longer term position look out for LA maternity covers and temporary contracts.

Hello!

I'd echo Ruby, you really need to decide what you want more, the balancing act... money or a life outside of school!! I'd stop doing the extra curri stuff if I were you for a start... you're relaly not paid enough!
