NQT new to supply

(Well apart from four days at the end of last term)


Hi,
just qualified in the summer and now about to start supply hopefully next week as no job just yet. The main aim is to get full time work but until then supply seems a very good way to keep the teaching going, get experience and teach several different year groups.

Thanks am hoping the start of the term isnt too slow on the supply front the guy from the agency (monarch) said it was normally but am also registered with the council (swindon)

Unfortunately it does tend to be quite slow, courses havent started or people havent gone sick yet. But use this time to drop letters/cv's etc off at local schools to get yourself known so that when they do need someone your name comes to mind!

I have a few schools in mind already that i want to drop cv's into that i have been into at some point during my training, just waiting for all clear from council and i can get going.

Good advice from footiegirl, there is so much to read on this site that you will pick up useful tips just browse at your leisure.

It is a bit nervewracking when you first start off with supply but as you mentioned it gives you an insight into different year groups and experience. One thing I've really noticed is how different each school works, some are really structured and others more laid back and as for the others

Hi and welcome to the site. Can't really say anymore than others have already but also if it's quiet at the start of sep, take the time to sort out resources and story books so you know you have some to grab at the start of a day because chances are it'll be last minute work this month.

Also, take the quiet times to drive round the area to see where exactly school are and how long it takes you in rush hour... saves any last minute panics/worries/conversations on the phone when you tell the secretary you'll be there in 10, and it takes you 45 (looks bad, I've done it!!)

Hi guys, I have just signed up to the forum. I was just wondering when you all say supply is slow to take off in September is it the whole month of Sept or just the 1st few weeks? Am just anxious to start.

of registering with the LEA is that the headteacher I have just finished working for is very keen to use me as his main supply teacher this year. I dont know too much about supply teaching so I was just wondering do you think I will get enough work from the one school alone to keep me busy a good few days a week or would you reccommend registering with an agency too? It is a fairly big school with approx 100 teachers. My main concern is that I will sign up with an agency as back up but then never be able to take work from them if im tied up at my old school, or the other way around where I dont register with an agency as I a pinning all of my hopes on my old school but then dont get much work.

Just hopeful that someone with a bit more experience than me can offer some advice. Do you generaly find yourselves working in the same schl a lot rather than moving around?

Wow, approx 100 teachers???!!!! Is this a secondary school?

My little story regarding this: I work for 2 schools, approx. 8 teachers each, and get more than enough work, with a day or two off here and there in a month to make sure I keep my life in order (go to the bank, get the shopping in etc!)

So if there's 100 teachers, I'm sure you'll be kept busy enough!

However, if you decide to go with an agency too, don't ever feel guilty about not being available for one, if you're in work, you're in work, and that's great, and if the agency/school contacted you too late, then be glad you're in demand and that you're getting advance bookings!

September: people don't like to be ill when they're getting used to their new classes, course dates are just becoming available... but I'd say you should get work next week perhaps... I could have worked the full week in both my schools next week already! It really does vary massively though, we do hear stories of people going weeks without work...
