Supply in year 1
I start supply on Monday in a year 1 class. Has anyone got any useful tips, advice resources? its my first time supply teaching, and I am a NQT. In addition to this I have never trained in year 1!
Any help and advice would be appreciated!
Thanks

Wear trousers or a full length skirt! They tug and poke and lift.
If it's booked, you should have planning left, but knowing Y1 it'll be crazy so make sure you get there in plenty of time to read and digest.
When they're sitting on the carpet, right from the start of the day, do not accept anything less that total silence while you talk, or you'll not get them quiet for the rest of the day. Have a sign, like a tambourine or something, that means you want them to stop and listen.
Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Yes agree with you Nutty, I always tell the children at the start of the day: my name (write it on the board) then tell them what i expect of them! For instance always put your hand up if you want to speak to me, don't call out or talk if i am talking, or another child is answering my question To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. This seems to do the trick with me, across all the classes. I am fair but firm and totally dislike rudeness (like most children). You always get those children that don't have good listening skills though and those are the ones that you need to remind of your rules and if they still ignore you-move them (that tends to work) To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. Good luck with your yr 1 class- i am sure you will be brilliant, just act confident and calm (even if you don't feel it at the time) To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

My first day as a supply teacher
Hi everyone, I quite enjoyed yesterday... although the nasty receptionist left me in a room with no planning and did not even show me to the To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. s. However.. 30 minutes later 2 ta's walked in and pretty much To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. e my day easy. Although I kind of felt useless as the TA's obviously knew all of the routines and the children, so it did not feel like I could take much control. Overall, it was not too bad, and I am going back this afternoon. I get the feeling it will not always be as easy as yesterday. In the afternoon the children just had to do 'play through learning' which basically involved the children playing and choosing whatever they wanted to do.
Thanks for all of your help!

yr 1
Hi Luclu
Glad you survived in yr 1 and it wasn't too bad. I've had the same sort of treatment at a few schools and had to find important places like To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. and felt a bit like a To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. but survived. Glad the TA's guided you, they are invaluable people to be honest and very useful to have. Although at times you do have to (in a nice way, not forceful) just teach and not let them take all of the control To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. . I think some of them are used to the odd supply teacher that may be happy to let them get on with it and just sit back To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. I have come across TA's that actually teach classes and do it extremely well.
But glad you survived and everyday of supply gets easier honest To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Glad you enjoyed it! And back already, they must have liked you too... That's it, first one over and done with, unless you have a really awful day in an awful school and have to go back again for a second day, it's all plain To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater.
