Default supply work!

I have just handed in my notice as a fulltime permenant teacher and hope to get supply work in September. I was wondering if I need to join an agency, LEA or if as Ive already been offered work, wether I can 'go it alone'. I have a registered business that does a bit of all sorts, not supply teaching yet, so could invoice them through this business. What else do I need?

Hi tirnanog, welcome to the forum!

The answer to your question kind of depends on your local authority. Some will only allow supply teachers to work through an agency, others, like mine, ask you to register with them and join their 'list' which is sent to schools who can then contact you for work. If yours is like mine, then there should be no problems with working directly through schools themselves, which is what I did. You do need to check with the LA though, to find out what, in case they are one which requires you to join an agency. I don't bill them through my business, the first school I worked in submitted a time sheet for me at the end of the month, which generated a pay

number etc. for me.

The main thing I think is: enjoy this summer holiday! It's probably the first one you've had since becoming a teacher where you don't have to go into school and sort out your classroom and do any planning!

Good luck with your new career...

Would you like me to check your covering letter, CV, supporting statement or application form?

Red face

I contacted one LA who are sending me an application pack, so guess thats how to join their list.
Ive finished as I am so fed up with being told I have support but then not getting it. My youngest child has cancer and although I had 6 months off on sick, I returned to work. Then when we found we were being hospitalised again quite frequently I felt more guilty about school, so after taking more time off on sick I resigned!
Im worried now that the absences will go against me if I have to apply to a supply list, yet 4schools have already asked me to work for them in September!

Thank you and you're welcome. If the LA have sent an application form, it may still be possible for you to work in those schools that have asked you - e.g. my LA told me I couldn't join the list, call again in 18 months as their list was over subscribed... and I worked in 13 schools in that 18 months!! They had to pay me...

Absences will not go against you - if you've already got work offered, then take it, and if you've got 4 schools asking already, you shouldn't ever be short of as much work as you are able to / need to take on.

Isn't it a sorry state of affairs when people felel guilty about not being at school when they've a valid reason for not being there? I only took one day off ill in my career (kidney stones, was on morphine so didn't have much choice!) as I knew what hassle it caused at school, I always saved my my illnesses for the holidays!

You're right to resign unfortunately, concentrate on your child!

house Tirnanog. So sorry about your child, but you are right to want to be there for her/him, and you do feel guilty about time off even if the school doesn't make you feel guilty. Hope you get the supply work you want/need. Lots of luck

yes, it is more important to be with her but I enjoy teaching so want to keep my hand in.
Hope it starts well in September then I can pick up a few schools and have the flexibility of work too.
