Default Hello, New Supply Teacher

First of all, thank you so much for having created this website. I have been reading the threads for several weeks before deciding to register and I have found it very useful and supportive. I only

ted supply a few weeks ago and so far so good. I did a return to teaching course last term and was with two reception classes for 10 weeks. It was great!

Although I have a secondary background and the learning curve has been steep, I love it! So far I've worked with Year 1 classes (my favourite KSs are foundation and KS1) but had year 6 yesterday and doing year 5 on Thursday. Yesterday was rather

ing as nobody knew which class I was covering and what the work was. Was eventually given some guided reading for 20 mins then quick change of groups and then PE. All I had for that was a CD of the Star wars track and the lesson plan was: find movements to match the music!! Went fine and the children were nice but was if it had been a wild class??
Enjoyed it though. Thank you

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad you have been enjoying supply so far. I had a day like yours the other day, no-one knowing where you were meant to be or what the planning was etc. I find it a good

s on here. I find it easier to do this in ks2 as they are more able to work themselves but worth having for ks1/foundation too.

Hope you enjoy year 5, I had year 5 yesterday and they were lovely so I hope you have as nice a day.

Hi, I finished my PGCE in July and have been trying to get a perm position, but, i havent been able to get one as i am rubbish at interviews! Ive been doing supply since late Sept and I have had such a mixed bag of experiences it is untrue!

One of my 1st classes was a really bad y6 class- they were horrid, just afew examples here!- one lad threw some scissors at the TA, in assembly one lad was doing roly-poly's whilst another was sat shouting rude remarks (there was a new member of staff doing the assembly and she didnt know what to do with them??!) I had to tell a girl off and she just ignored me and sat there

and v v v well behaved- i was in shock, it was fantastic!!!

i know i have only been on supply for just over a month but i am enjoying it and i look forward to getting a perm job- or even one which is long enough to complete my nqt terms (even just one!)

At every interview i have had (its 5 now!) they have said i am too nervous. the most common q's which let me down are- every child matters and inclusion? i know these are such big topics and i have done a masters level assignment including these 2 aspects but i never know what the important bits are to say at interview- can anyone help?

I know this is a very long message, but it is my 1st so thought i would go off on one! ha

Thanks to anyone if you reply.

Don't worry about that one Year 6 class. I blame the school in those cases - they obviously allow the kids to behave that way and so the kids just carry on. It's not your fault!!!!! Good luck with your interview!

Hello to you both and welcome!

Glad you have joined us!

Good to hear that you have managed to get some work this term and survived it! As C'belle said, dont worry about those year 6's, at the end of the day be glad you are not their normal teacher! At least you have the choice of teaching them again or not! Good luck with the rest of the term and job hunting - the right job for you will come up soon and all the nerves will be forgotten.

Good luck x

hi to both of you, glad you are mostly enjoying supply and surviving.
As for interviews Pinky - well hopefully the more you do the better you will get, but well I don't know what to say about how to stay calm. I had to stop talkign to people about them, and not think about them until about 2 days before otherwise i'd get myself too worked up. Rescue remedy might help during the day of the interview, preparing some

s for standard questiosn and having them on prompt cards might help.
But as for help on those actual questions - sorry, my head is just too full of scrambled eggs (or at least that's how it feels at the moment!) I cna't think what I used to say - but I don't think I was ever asked about ECM, and inclusion - well that's all about differentiation mainly and assessing so you are pitching teaching and learning correctly - sorry that probably doesn't help much - examples are always a good

Hi Pinky and Deathlyhallows!

Ok, ECM - you could wow them with the lastest:

Inclusion - that really is a matter of personal opinion, and I would base your personal opinion on whatever's happening in that particular school if I were you! Have a quick squizz at their website, or, go to a Special School's website and have a look at their inclusion policy for some really good stuff (try Sandalwood School if you can find a site for them) (yep, I'm from Sunny Donny!)

So you've both got your first days over and done with... that's the tough bit!
