Default Getting into private tutoring

First of all - Hello
To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

My name is Martin and I am a KS2 teacher with a year 3/4 class.
I am looking at a slight change by doing supply work and some private tutoring. I would like to hear from anyone with views or information on the following:

1. What would I need in terms of legal cover etc for tutoring at a student's house?
2. How much could I charge for Maths initially at KS2 but possibly upto KS4?
3. Would people reccomend an agency or self promoted?
4. Where is the best place to advertise?
5. Any other information?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum!

1. Public Liability Insurance? Try [url]

2. Depends on your area, experience, competition etc., but somewhere between £15 and £25 an hour.
3. Self-promoted!
4. Word of mouth, Post Office/supermarkets and local newspaper. There are also some online databases you could try registering with... some are free... try

for a start with that.
5. Do anything you can to keep planning for these lessons to a minimum, you can end up doing three hours work and only getting paid for one! Also, look carefully at the supply situation before diving in... in some places it's not as good as others...

Hiscox are good for insurance, good value and easy to setup.

As for pricing - anything between £15-£30 an hour is the norm. You can get up to £40/hour if in the right area and subject.

Good luck finding students

I currently private tutor; I have acquired some students via an agency, but find they take a hefty chunk of commission. Self promotion is better and easier.
