Default China

Hey I am starting teaching in year 5, ad for the first half term, I have just been told that the topic is 'china'. The science topic is sun, earth, moon so I thought that we could look at how China will be dark when England is light etc... but I really have not got much knowledge on other things to do, or any good resources. When I try searching I mainly get the chinese new year!

Thanks in advance to any suggestions!

Try searching for Chinese harvest moon festival. I'm sure you can think of things to do with that when you find some info. What about linking it with some Chinese legends in literacy? Do some Chinese brush painting and do their names in Chinese characters - and link some numeracy to the abacus.

I'll have a think, see if I can come up with any other

OMG HUGE topic name!! What subject?? All of them??? Tonnes and tonnes of stuff you could do... is it any subject in particular?

Only throw China into science briefly, as part of another lesson as Earth, Sun and Moon has historically been one Q that the kids got wrong on the Science SATs in Y6... there's so much they're supposed to understand, and all completely abstract to them.

I remember a school that I worked in did celebrate the chinese new year by cooking chinese foods and people visited as chinese dragons.

tale - like Lon Po Po, which can be compared to Little Red Riding Hood. May be a nice starting point - contrast between the cultures?

Sorry I have taken so long to get back! Yes I am sure it is the country and I know its huge. I just thought someone may have done it! Not sure we are looking at it in depth, although the school is starting to topic teach, so it will be a kind of experiment..

I am really looking forward to starting my new job... I really enjoyed supply, but it will be nice to have my own class for a year and then get back on supply

From qualifying I have been on supply and loving all of my free time, I think it will be such a shock going from supply to starting my nqt year, I hope that I survive it!

You never know, you might change your mind after a year - but I feel a bit like that too - although the extra money will be nice

It sounds like you are all organised anyway. Good luck, I'm sure it will be fine - you won't be alone, there are a few of us starting jobs in September.

Luclu I'm in the same position as you whereas starting my NQT year and also have a year contract. I have also enjoyed the flexibility of supply, I especially love Fridays off, although it has been rare lately due to how busy I've been. Am looking forward to a regular wage though, at last
