Default Ideas!?

To get children to stay on task I give them a time limit to do each activity and explain exactly what I expect from them in that time. If tables are being chatty I draw a Noise Meter on the board (smiley face at bottom,

face at the top). I move an arrow up the meter as the children get louder. I find they enjoy quieting down just to see me move the meter down. If it reaches the top, the whole class has to stay in silence for ...... mins (your choice).

I sometimes (with littleuns), appoint a noise police on each table to be in charge of keeping noise level down and I reward quiet on-task tables with points.

I have to try the volume control slider! I have two pages open ready on the IWB, one with a smiley, one with a real grouch face... just click on whichever I feel at the time.. if the smiley stays up, the kids have a better lesson (because I'm in a better mood/able to teach!) Team points fly round the classroom, and they achieve more.

It's hard when you're on supply I think to keep kids on task, you generally get uninspiring worksheet fillers to give them and have to make the most of a bad situation!

Music in the background works with your own class, but only on supply if you've already got a good relationship with the class I think, otherwise they take the P!

If I get given a rubbish, uninspiring worksheet, I generally do something else!!!! I know teachers probably hate this but if the kids are going to learn more, it's better in the end!

If your in a foundation or KS1 class and it is getting a bit noisey and out of control. I use Tai Chi time - where I put Indian or Chinese music on and sit in a circle on the carpet doing pretend tai chi hand movements until they are reasonably calm again. They usually love it

Ha! That's excellent! I can see all these little kids doing that! Saw someone who had started YogiBugs, yoga classes for kids on Dragon's Den the other night (I watch them online), and thought that was a fab

I've started drawing a smiley face on the board and everytime I see someone being good, I write their names on the board. I did this when I lost my voice last week, and could no longer tell off the ones who were being naughty! Writing their names means I don't even have to talk, I just look around and write some names, and the rowdy ones usually take notice and sit up straight!

Everytime I see them being good after that, I give them a tick. The people with the most ticks by their name at the end of the day get a piece of treasure.
