I was at a school today with children who pushed my buttons so much that I felt like I wanted to walk out. This class superceded any other classes I have had problems with. Today I walked into the classroom and found no lesson plan. Luckily I had some work prepared in my bag which I thought I could use. When the bell rang the children came into the classroom, I waited for them to seat themselves and then introduced myself. They were quite fine, and I thought Oh good this will be a beautiful day. However when I picked the

I was at the point of wanting to leave and just as I was comtemplating that the p.e teacher walked in and tried to come to my rescue by continuing to mark the class

However In their own classroom they were anything but beautiful they were terrible, they ran around the classroom, refused to follow instructions , refused to do the work allo

I found myself shouting at them most of the day to try and control which was wrong of me to do. They would not conform even when I tried to use the classroom managment strategies and all the other strategies I had been taught through behaviour managment courses and tal

I felt like a failure as a teacher . I have decided not to go back to that particular school.
I dont know about any of you but I have found that when I speak to the school staff about student behaviour , I get well we all at sometime have played up on the relief teacher , Thats not a good enough excuse in my books and I feel its time we relief teachers be shown the same curtesy and respect that is portrayed to the full time teachers.

Oh dear I feel for you, they sound like the class from hell and beyond and you are right not to want to return there. Why would any supply want to work at the school when supply teacher's are treated without any respect!!! To be honest we all encounter difficult behaviour and you do not sound as if you lack experience in that area but sometimes no amount of strategies will work with some chn. The teacher who used those words about them playing up relief teacher's deserves to be sat down and ********* I need to be professional here really

To be honest it sounds as if they only half heartedly supported you and that is a waste of time. Take a deep breath and forget the school exists, go elsewhere and never return to that school again, I would say, treat yourself

Default Sometimes it just isn't worth it...

Audrey is so right. Sometimes, no matter WHAT we do, certain children don't behave for us because we are 'the supply'. Often it's down to how supportive the staff are too...I used to really beat myself up if I had behaviour issues with a child, but now, I just do what I can. Sometimes, I won't go back to certain schools or year groups, and often that has as much to do with staff attitudes as it does pupil behaviour!!

You do right - don't go back.

! It's a lonely business too. Although having a Supply Teachers Support forum certainly helps. At least you know someone, somewhere is going to understand!

OMG...this was my very first day of supply almost exactly!! I had to call in so many other teachers and I was in tears as soon as I was home and inside my flat. They were awful.

I think it all depends on the area you teach in as well. Many of my schools are within the Birmingham City Centre or surrounding areas and they can be quite rough. I'm in NO way a racist, but I know I can't be the only one who feels that some schools have a pattern of poor behaviour from certain groups...and I'm not saying it's the same one-race across the board. If it's a city school and perhaps poorer or lower-performing academically, then that's a sign of little to no parent involvement in the school itself, which explains the behaviour most times.

I feel for you though. My first supply post is one I will never forget and I won't ever return there again. I think sometimes you're just in survival mode and you have to do whatever is reasonably necessary to get through the day with them when there aren't any plans left.

Isn't it amazing how it differs from place to place eh but in all fairness there are good and bad schools with difficult chn. Whilst I love a challenge it makes all the difference to have the support of the staff. I honestly believe that if the staff are nearly at the point of giving up or are fairly negative then the battle has been lost. As for the negativity shown towards supply well it does I suppose depend on the circumstances. I know that for those on this forum who teach as a regular teacher they will have their own view. For those on supply it can be a different story. As for good and supply - well we've covered that in a previous thread I think. But in a difficult school the support is paramount and don't let anyone let you think any different.

Very much a case of the bad school and the good school, we've all been at particular schools that we wouldn't return to.
