I have 'grumps' from time to time when I don't think the children are giving their best. It does work. I don't shout but I do explain very clearly what I expect from them. It works from tinies to olderies.

Karen,

It does get easier as time goes on and the others are right, You would not be human if you did not get angry. However just a few words of advice. Try not to become so angry that you shout at them and dont let the students see you

y of the school's behaviour managment plan. Or speak to principle, Get to know the school's policies and ethos. If you know those things in advance believe me you have already won half the battle. Get to know the key people; Principles name, The Deputy,Neighbouring teachers, Behaviour person if school has one. Occassionally drop classroom teacher's name. Finally, If your class continues to disrupt put minutes up on the board. Those minutes are the number of minutes you will keep your class in at playtime. If they waste your time, you waste theirs at playtime. Above all stay positive
Good luck!!!!!

I'm in a similar situation, I'm going to try the 'get them being good' approach and am adapting these charts / tokens: google 'free behavior chart' (I can't post links yet). I don't think there is any answer to our struggles, I'm already having worries about a job on Tuesday. I'll let you know how I get on and whether the charts / stickers work!

t of your expectations of them (how you expect them to behave during the lesson/day) do not tolerate anything. I always used to use and still use it when I need to: write the names of those not managing and who kept interrupting me or ignoring me on the board, each time they did they lost 3 mins of their break, it doesn't sound a lot but it worked for me and it increased each time individual chn interrupted. When they asked if they could win it back the answer was no! My answer was if you waste my time I waste yours. I personally do not like punishing the whole class as it is usually only particular chn who misbehave.

yea you can pull a lot off on confidence.

make sure you are fully aware of the school discipline procedure it really helps to know the "level system" employed and any other members of staff that could be useful.

there is a really good forum for this stuff:
on the TES "Community" - forums/5.aspx

also make sure that you have some class work prepared. A really good website for high quality, variety and easily accessible resources is "Teachable"

Stick to your pinciples. Children will be quiet if you are quiet. It might suit them to be noisy and to make you noisy, but they have to learn. Admittedly you have to raise your voice to be heard over a noisy class, but remind them that you should be able to SPEAK to them and keep reinforcing this point. Some children are unreasonable and will not co-operate, on top of this the school may be unsupportive, but you have at least tried. Remember - what does not work in a few schools, may work in many others. End of sermon!

Agreed. I worked in a school today, where they told me that they were available to take a miscreant and that the rest would settle if I sent him out. As it turned out, I did not need to send him out, but at least they
