s for me. Today I was doing non contact time in a combined prep 1 class. and before a majority of you think what is she complaining about their preps, Ill tell you. I thought the class would give me a chance to use my early childhood qualifications and that they would be an easy class to take. I was wrong. I was to take a social skills lesson with the children, and from the moment I arrived in the room, the children refused to follow instructions. When they were finished their lunch I told them to put away their lunch box and sit on the carpet, instead some ran outside and climbed up on the port racks and stood up and held on to a pole. I asked them to hop down and they ignored me. I asked an assistant to get them down and they hopped down for her but as soon as her back was turned back up they hopped. I then decided to ring for help and I went back to the rest of the class who were also restless, I thought to my self that because they were so restless a story might settle them down. so I picked up a large book and started to read it, while reading the book , some children started to talk but not about the story about other things, they pushed and shoved each other and disrupted me when I was reading the story with tales of shoving and pushing. I then became animated as I thought if I animate the story the children may become more interested it worked and they listened until i finished the story. When taking the social skills lesson some tried to disrupt again I then put children's names on the warning board, however these same children got a chair and moved thier names off the board.
I then gave the children a find the playground puzzle to do and they managed to do that ok. however when they finished their work the children became restless again, so I decided to finish the lesson with a game. I used every trick I could think of to reach these children but found it extremely hard, I also found that none of my behaviour managment strategies including the class strategies worked on the children. I found my self raising my voice, which I know does not help as the louder you go the louder they go. and the more disruptive they become. These children were swearing at times, backanswering and refusing to follow directions. I spoke thier main teacher and she said I did well to survive. ( this class is known to be the worse class in the entire school) PLEASE DOES ANYONE HAVE IDEAS ON HOW I CAN REACH THESE CHILDREN AND SO WE CAN HAVE A PLEASENT LESSON.
THANKS PETUNIA.

How old are they?

Sing, a silly, even stupid song, and tell them you can all sing it again when you've done 5 minutes work... then 6, then 7...

Default re class from hell.

Nutty

The children I teach are all of various ages however the one I told you about was prep/1 class. and they have a habit of playing up on anyone who is not their regular teacher.

I am doing a non contact time contract at the moment teaching various classes. and I have noticed that quiet a few classes through out the school tend to have issues with behaviour. For instance I was in a combined 2/3 class yesterday and the children got chairs and up ended them and poured beads out all over the floor before walking out at home time. During class they ran around the room, back chatted, refused to follow directions and would not adhere to any behaviour strategies used.

Iknow this may sound dramatic but I feel at times that Im not doing my job properly and I have to admit that I have resorted to yelling when all the strategies I use have not worked. The trouble is I know we are not supposed to yell at the kids and that yelling only reinforces the bad behaviour. Im also wondering whether I expect too much from these children in terms of working quietly and sitting and listening to the teacher. My feelings at times are also reinforced by the fact that I have assistants whom tend to make me feel like an idiot when Im teaching and when the kids play up they get moody and make you feel incompetent. So do you have any other suggestions if I was to sing a silly song to these kids they would
